Louise Elliot has a record for weaponising official processes to push her hate-based political extremism. In this instance, I think she's making a false equivalence by deliberately conflating respect for the culture of Indigenous people who own the land she lives on and works on with freedom of religious belief. As well as being hopelessly racist, she's so transphobic that people have (rightfully, in my opinion) refused to do business with her or let her use their venue to host an event that promotes hate toward persecuted minorities. This is consistent with public statements she's made previously on social media about "Culture Wars" and other discriminatory RWNJ nonsense.

Today's #CityofGoldCoast #Council meeting was very frustrating to watch, with some representatives completely misunderstanding the situation, arguing amongst themselves, getting upset, grandstanding and spending hours and hours going over seriously old declarations of interest. Get some auto text set and get the f*ck on with the business at hand. The #AcknowledgementofCountry which was stated as being voted on today - wasn't. As for the prayer, it continued in it's stumbling way.

The five of us are THRILLED to have worked together to write a brilliant submission to the Parliamentary “Inquiry into plastic pollution in Australia’s oceans and waterways”.

Our acknowledgements sections are a real point of pride, as is the fact the voices of three #WomenInSTEM, at different stages of their careers were given equally opportunity to contribute.

In such a system of instrumentalised cruelty, Behrouz Boochani wrote story after story, reflection after reflection, one mobile text at a time, until he had produced enough writing to fill multiple books. All this on a phone (or series of phones) at chronic risk of being confiscated.

All this is context/background, for those unfamiliar with Australia's decades of self-righteous cruelty, claiming to save lives (fewer drownings on dangerous boat journeys) by destroying lives (in indefinite detention under abusive conditions).

The session this evening begins with an #AcknowledgementOfCountry, an important truth to note in the context of people arriving unexpectedly by boat in these lands now called Australia.

Then there is an short introductory address by two of Boochani's collaborators in this latest just-published #book. Titled "Freedom, Only Freedom", the book is primarily by Boochani, with short contributions from many others. These two speak of the current situation in Iran, with heightened state violence & popular uprising.

This is followed by a minute's silence for his fellow detainees who died in detention. Their many names are spoken; silence is kept.
