Los Amigos Invisibles – Arepa 3000: A Venezuelan Journey Into Space (2000, Venezuela)
Our next spotlight is on number 443 on The List, submitted by weirdofhermiston.
Given that tomorrow is December solstice, I think this is a rather perfect album to listen to no matter what hemisphere you happen to be in, whether you’re celebrating making it through the longest night or the longest day. This spectacular Venezuelan group mixes all sorts of Latin music with acid jazz, disco, house, and funk, and this album – their 3rd – will get you moving with all live instrumentation. The fact that Los Amigos Invisibles was signed to David Byrne’s Luaka Bop label after he found a CD the band themselves had planted in a NYC record shop is quite possibly one of the funnest fun facts I’ve come across in writing these spotlights. Another fun fact is that the coolest song on the album is called “Masturbation Session”. Good thing they’re invisible, amirite?!
I believe the group has since downsized from six musicians to three (or, maybe even just two?), but they have some scheduled dates in the US (and one in Canada) coming up in spring 2026. Check out their website for details (and, perhaps, keep them in your thoughts…).
Happy solstice, y’all.
