Today, our summer students wrapped up their 10 weeks at @jeffersonlabva

Our crew was happy to have Veltman and Colin this summer! They did great work, and I look forward to seeing where they go next!

We installed our permanent #magnet samples on tripods in the CEBAF #accelerator enclosure. These, along with those in my previous post, will be used to study how the magnets degrade in a #radiation environment.

Each plate in this photo contains 4 sets of 4 permanent #magnets. Each will have 36 point measurements with a Teslameter, and 12 measurements with a Helmholtz Coil/Fluxmeter. 48 measurements/plate, lots of plates left to get baseline measurements.

A nice write up about the truly groundbreaking and unique #particle #accelerator where I was trained, and returned to work years later.

Jefferson Lab's CEBAF is not huge, but its impact has been for decades.

Benchmarking CEBAF

Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility

Spent most of the day with a crew of new #accelerator operators, assembling and organizing our permanent #magnet pair assemblies. These will be measured, and then installed in the CEBAF enclosure to see if/how they degrade from #radiation exposure.

So proud to announce that my PhD student, Alex Coxe, can now be addressed as Dr. Alex Coxe!

Many thanks to his Academic Advisor, Balša Terzić for setting this train in motion, and all the support along the way.

Tomorrow, I'll be giving the Physics Dept. Colloquium at Old Dominion University.

The talk will be for a general physics audience, and discuss the current CEBAF machine, the FFA@CEBAF Energy Upgrade, and our permanent magnet degradation studies!

Elise Cutts: Physicist Sekazi Mtingwa considers himself an apostle of science: The leading accelerator physicist is a mentor, activist, policy expert and humanitarian

"Ask physicist Sekazi Mtingwa how he ended up where he is today, and he’ll start with his grandmother’s deeply religious home. Growing up there in Atlanta, young Mtingwa somehow got the idea that he was the second coming of Christ.

"That year snowballed into seven, during which he and theoretical physicist James Bjorken developed the theory of intrabeam scattering — which describes how charged particles spread out when packed together into high-energy beams."

Physicist Sekazi Mtingwa considers himself an apostle of science

After big contributions in accelerator physics, Sekazi Mtingwa has been focused on opening science for everyone.

@smurthys The control systems for most particle accelerators and other large #physics experiments are built on C++. It might sound like a niche application, but it’s a surprisingly large ecosystem of libraries, services and device drivers for controlling some of the world’s largest machines.
