Will Oremus: Flawed #AI denies benefits to low-income Americans, report warns

"With the incoming Trump administration reportedly looking to slash food stamps and Medicaid, a new report finds that artificial intelligence and related technologies are playing a growing role in determining who receives those benefits — and in some cases mistakenly denying them.

The 197-page report by TechTonic Justice, a nonprofit launched Tuesday, finds that almost all 92 million low-income Americans already “have some basic aspect of their lives decided by AI” or automated decision-making software. That includes people affected by:

•Eligibility and enrollment processes for Medicaid;
•Prior authorization processes used by private insurers;
•Fraud-detection systems used by food stamp programs; and
•Landlords’ use of background-screening algorithms and rent-setting algorithms."

A Report from TechTonic Justice
Inescapable AI: The Ways #AI Decides How Low-Income People Work, Live, Learn, and Survive

"The use of artificial intelligence, or AI, by governments, landlords, employers, and other powerful private interests restricts the opportunities of low-income people in every basic aspect of life: at home, at work, in school, at government offices, and within families. AI technologies derive from a lineage of automation and algorithms that have been in use for decades with established patterns of harm to low-income communities. As such, now is a critical moment to take stock and correct course before AI of any level of technical sophistication becomes entrenched as a legitimate way to make key decisions about the people society marginalizes."

Cops Running DNA-Manufactured Faces Through Face Recognition Is a Tornado of Bad Ideas

In keeping with law enforcement’s grand tradition of taking antiquated, invasive, and oppressive technologies, making them digital, and then calling it innovation, police in the U.S. recently combined two existing dystopian technologies in a brand new way to violate civil liberties. A police force...

::sigh:: on one hand, we've got shitty "ChatGPT Checkers" pushing the surveillance model of education, which would be a terrible idea even if they worked (they don't). And on the other hand, we've got #AISnakeOil peddlers basically saying "it's only plagiarism if you get caught!"
