Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup aka #dcss is pretty damn hard. Even playing the recommended "easy build" of a Gargoyle Berserker, I keep dying around character and dungeon level 5. It's like you go straight from fighting a few loose rats and snakes to getting ambushed by an entire orc army all at once. And you can't grind XP because each level is permanent and the monsters stay dead, unlike in #Angband and #ADOM. #roguelike #yasd

Well, I figured out one way to run the last version of #ADOM in...sort of a terminal, at least:

The DOS version is up to date with version 3.3.3. Good enough for me.

Tangentially related, I'm watching @LoadingReadyRun Cori and Angel play #ADOM during their recent Subathon (which is why I'm interested in giving it another run after a long time away from it), and their "commander and navigator" style of play seems like an interesting way to play a classic-style roguelike. Does require a lot of trust and patience between the two players, though.

I'm trying to run #ADOM in terminal in #Linux, but am running into...uh, this. Presumably some terminal incompatibility nonsense. I'm not finding anything on how to fix this from searching online. Can anyone suggest a fix (which is not "play the graphical version")?

Played a bunch of Ultimate ADOM (Ancient Domains of Mystery): Caverns of Chaos (which is a sequel to the original ADOM) today on Steam. It has some bad reviews, but really, I think it's an improvement on the original. I find it to be a blast-- a great dungeon crawler. And a great opportunity to play as a ratling priestess. 😂

Yes! I was playing #adom once at a coffee shop in the early 2000s and a passer-by reported me to the manager b/c they thought I was "hacking"

Notch (of Minecraft fame) is apparently thinking of doing a modern take of an old-school #roguelike such as #ADOM or #NetHack.

... Really? So many people seem to be so excited of modern NetHack, because they just love NetHack so so much.
