The only issues I had on #Linux fit on one hand and are solely the manufacturers being dicks:
#AMD pre-#FLOSS'd drivers and old #ATi cards that need them.
#Nvidia being dicks and not offering feature-parity for their #GPU #drivers acrss platforms as well as actively working against FLOSS #driver #developers...
#Fibocom #850GL aka. #Intel #XMM7360 and neither of them nor #Lenovo willing to #support that #WWAM module on an "#UbuntuCertified", €3k+ #ThinkPad #P15v #Workstation #Laptop running #Ubuntu 20.04 LTS!
@fedora Sadly, #Lenovo wronged me as a professional when they refused to support their "#UbuntuCertified" #ThinkPad #P15v's #WWAN module ( #Fibocom #850GL, based on #Intel's #XMM7360 baseband).
Add to that the discontinuation of any #wired - #USB "ThinkPad Compact Keyboard with #UltraNav" and the only reason I've not retired my #X230Tablet for a @frameworkcomputer / #Framework13 or god forbid some #DIY abomination is my belief in #UseLonger!
@knoppix95 this is nothing new.
#Lenovo almost always offered around €125 discount for "no operating system" and €100 for #UbuntuLTS over #Windows - if they offer any of those options at all…
What is a problem is that Lenovo doesn't actually #Support even "#Ubuntu #certified" devices like the #P15v and it's #Intel #XMM7360-based #WWAN chip, the #Fibocom #850GL, at all, and they refuse to provide #drivers for it!
@simonzerafa I mean obviously #reuse / #UseLonger is better and if your options are "corporate surplus" or nothing then I'd never judge.
To me it's just that #ThinkPad as a brand has really died as every single Device is a #downgrade in #repairability & #upgradeability compared to my #X230Tablet:
They have #SolderedDownRAM even on P-Series #Workstation machines, not just cheap cheap #Lenovo consoomer devices.
Batteries ain't toolfree-swappable anymore!
#WWAN modules are worse (i.e. #Fibocom #850GL aka. #Intel #XMM7360)
#Linux support gets worse and neither Lenovo nor @ubuntu feel responsible on a "#Ubuntu-certified Workstation" (i.e. #P15v)
Less & Worse #Docking options.
Most machines don't offer Linux or to eveb to opt-out of #Govware noone should pay their overcharged premium for (in fact #Microsoft pays Lenovo $25 for every #Windows #preinstall so they don't ship Linux, they don't even pay the $10 for an #OEM-#UEFI-Key, much less the $135+ of a #SystemBuilder version they charge for!)
...
Personally, I wish I had €.€€€.€€€ so I could just develop the #NUCbook and be done with the #Enshittification of #Laptops / #Notebooks!
@krutonium @darth +1
Until they do that, I #WontBuy any new device from them.
And yes, I'm still #mad at #Intel for the #GMA500 fuckup and at #Fibocom, #Lenovo and #Intel for the #XMM7360 / #850GL shitshow and at #nvidia for their bs...
@[email protected] they have a new phone now, I forgot who made it.
@CppGuy @frameworkcomputer In terms if #avoid I'd sadly say #Lenovo (espechally outside the #ThinkPad line) and any cheap/craptastic no-name brand...
Tho personally, Lenovo, #Intel, #Fibocom and @ubuntu / #Canonical ruined my experience with the ThinkPad #P15v because despite being "#UbuntuCertified" the #WWAN module (an Intel #XMM7360 rebadged as Fibocom #850GL) didn't work and neither of the aformentioned parties felt responsible to fix it!
@stanford yeah, that's what I know for like a decade...
Also it's not a simple #VendorLock but a #Whitelist of PCI-IDs, MAC Adress- and IMEI Number Ranges, so it's not enough to have i.e. a #Lenovo-rebranded #Fibocom #850GL which is a rebadged #Intel #XMM7360, but only the version offered for i.e. the #ThinkPad #P15v will be accepted and initialized.
@[email protected] 'The only #VendorLocking I've seen are on #WiFi & #WWAN #cards being #whitelisted in terms of PCI-ID and MAC-Adress/IMEI number... The only company that does #VendorLocking on #RAM is #hp with their #ProBooks, bricking #PXE-Boot in the process... I had a work-issued #ThinkPad #P15v and that thing never complained about me swapping the 256GB NVMe for a pair of 1TB Crucial P1's... I've never heard of #VendorLocking of #SSDs outside of #Apple devices...
@stdevel @bradlinder that is sadly not the truth anymore.
Despite being "#UbuntuCertified" absolute basics like the #WWAN module didn't wotk at all on a work issued #ThinkPad #P15v.
Neither them nor #Canonical nor #Fibocom (#850GL WWAN Card) nor #Intel (#XMM7360 is the chipset of said card) felt responsible to fix it.
Not gonna talk about #nvidia being shitty again on that occasion...
