In 1877 the Grand Orient of France removed the Volume of Sacred Law from their altars and prayers from their ritual, to emphasize the Masonic principles of universitality and its adherence to the doctrine of separation of Church and State. The Grand Lodge of France and the National Grand Lodge of France retained them.
The Grand Orient of France remains an unrecognised Grand Lodge to this day.
