The first US Grand Lodge was formed in Massachusetts in 1777. The oldest working Grand Lodge, however, is that of Virginia, formed in 1778, with that of Massachusetts being reformed in 1792.

Between 1777 and 1796 thirteen Grand Lodges were formed in the USA. They adhered predominantly to the Grand Lodge of Antients in London.

Opposition to Freemasonry in the United States became strong enough by 1830 that 124 of the 983 registered newspapers in the country were recorded as being anti-freemason. Of those 46 were in New York and 53 in Pennsylvania.

The Bible used for George Washington to swear his oath as President of the United States, on 30 April 1789, came from St. John's Lodge. It was brought to the ceremony by General Jacob Morton, Master of the Lodge.

Two of the ceremonial Masonic aprons worn by George Washington have been preserved. One, presented to him by his French agents - Watson and Cassoul, both Masons - is held at the Alexandria-Washington Lodge 22 in Virginia. The second in the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania at their museum in Philadelphia.

Probably the first religious opposition to Freemasonry in the United States came from a group of Baptist churches in New York State, with an anti-freemasonry convention held in Milton, Saratoga County on 12 and 13 September 1827.

Denver's Capitol Hill neighborhood is a treasure of late-19th century and early-20th century architecture. This elegant home was constructed in 1895 and is one of numerous buildings in Denver that was built during this era out of local Colorado sandstone that features a deeply saturated red/orange color. Today this building holds six apartments, but it was probably built originally as a single-family residence for a wealthy family.

The building's style is mostly Richardsonian Romanesque, with thick walls and rusticated stone construction, a rounded bay, and an overall sense of weight. But the intricate decorative carvings throughout the façade reflect a lingering Victorian influence that serves to lighten the building's masonry heaviness.

What I particularly like is how this building has weathered beautifully over the past 130 years. Sandstone weathers at a faster rate than a harder material like granite, resulting in a softness and roundness to corners and edges and subtle variation to flat surfaces, giving this building a smooth, warm, comfortable appearance.
