I’v got one (hopefully) last comment on that book.
While Shakespeare clearly new how to set a scene – »somewhere else«, so he hadn’t do too much research to get details right, 12th Night *can* be dated as »somewhat contemporary« by one unimportant detail:
»perchance wind up my watch«
Watches were invented some time after ~1500.

I ges now we hav moved completely from medieval story to 20th centry crime/mistery story where cars ar cald horses.
The protagonist acts like a modern private investigator, not like a 13th century person.
Oh, but what about the fools’ guild?
Yeah, what about it?
Why should this anarchist/democratic secret society with modern (post-renaissance ideas exist at that time?
