Another teacher I admire, Rabbi Hillel, gave us 3 questions to guide our personal journey, to inspire servant-leaders:

If I am not for myself, who is for me?
And if I am only for myself, what am I?
And if not now, when?

I hope you find opportunities to practice the gifts of the #12daysofleanleadership, to reflect on Hillel's questions, and #servant-leadership.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

I hope you can find those moments to channel a little bit of Paul O'Neill into your practice.  What it unleashes is incredible.

How Paul O’Neill Fought For Safety At Alcoa

Paul O'Neill led a turnaround of the financial performance of struggling aluminum manufacturer Aloca, but NOT focusing on Aloca's stock price or revenues. Instead, he encouraged employees at all levels to fight for the safety of their coworkers by studying the process and working to become a zero accident company. And it made all the difference.

Value should be transparent. Decisions should be transparent. Your decisions, your definition of value should pass the "front page news, trending topics" test.

Don't you hate presents you can't return? 😎

There is no place for arrogance, because everyone had to serve the gemba and improve.  There's no benefit in hiding information - in fact, there are enormous costs when it happens.

Get used to paradoxes, because there are more to come.

Turned out, it wasn't me at all. And the challenge to transform a culture is insurmountable, unless the culture applies honesty and humility to its own practices.

If you're up for that, Bob's books and insights can help.

Because it wasn't me.

And it wasn't you.

You didn't fail.

Your organization did.

Today's #lean #leadership is one I posted earlier on Mastodon.

You may wonder at what an astronaut has to do with improvement. IMHO, thinking lean seems a lot like thinking like an astronaut.

Attached: 1 image Aim to be a zero. Try to be useful. Plan for the things that can kill you. Sweat the small stuff. Work the problem. Keep a sense of wonder. This book, recommended by a friend, offers amazing life lessons, grounded in #humanity, #frailty, and #humility, driven from a perspective most of us only dream of - #astronaut and space station commander Chris Hatfield. I wish more of our #leaders would give it a read and give it a try. #Canada would be a better country if we all did.

From observing the first pilot build, watching the body-in-white inch down the assembly line swarmed by a hundred engineers, team members, and VP's, through to the first sales model going to the marshalling yard for delivery, we all practiced kaizen every step of the way.

We were building cars, but we were really improving ourselves.

Kaizen Forever!
