🎉 Living with #ADHD ? A friend just launched Arota, an LLM-based #AI assistant helping task management, for people like her husband.

For now it's available only on the App Store, so Apple users can enhance its availability by using it and spreading words. Lots of thanks!

Hit character limits but I want to explain point 2,3,4 here:

  • 2: When you change topic, ND people don't just change to what you said, their brain can attempt to pull in every bit of information that can possibly be related to it. It's less like changing a tab in a browser, and more like closing the program and opening another.
  • 3: You can narrow this range, and have more of the 'upper' end, by simply providing/allowing adequate structure and for them to use their current fixation as motivation.
  • 4: Neurodivergent people resist sudden change, because we rely on predictability and structure to follow neurotypical people's preferred ways of working.

If you read this and think, "but wouldn't this benefit anyone?" Yes, exactly, that's kind of the point. Which just adds to the frustration that we don't do this more as a society.

When accessibility measures include an entire group of people, and still benefits everyone, it's absurd that we don't do it more.

This compulsive adherence to neurotypical social norms, and unwillingness to embrace neurodivergence, is what leads to social friction & conflict.

Frustratingly enough, it's caused by often ignorant assumptions as to 'why' ND people will prefer A over B, there are countless examples of this:

  • A preference for working alone/at home to better manage distractions, is seen as anti-social or 'difficult to work with'
  • Being unable to answer ad-hoc off-topic questions, is seen as unorganised or lack of intelligence.
  • Having variable (20-400%) effort and output, is seen as anything from 'lazy' to a variety of ways of saying 'you don't care'
  • Struggling with sudden changes to plans and structure, is seen as being difficult or unwilling to change/grow.

All of this is trivially easy to solve, and the information need to understand it could be summarized in a freggin' PowerPoint presentation.

It annoys me so much, because; Accessibility != Lack of ability

Just to be specific for my fellow ND people currently thinking through millions of mentally simulated cases of this: the way we communicate, are motivated and preferred working methods & environments.

#adhd #asd #neurodivergent #tech

There are tech companies who have a neurodivergent majority working there, yet compulsively follow neurotypical social rules & norms.

Even pointing this out could cause friction over awareness, while the absurdity of it all goes over their heads.
