It's been a few years since I drew this. I still stand by it.

All we wanted was a browser. All you had to do was build a browser. You had one job.

A "privacy notice" is often - not always, but often - really an "anti-privacy notice".
Arm has licensed its chip designs to other companies for decades. But now the company is making its own chip for the first time - the Arm AGI CPU is a data center chip co-designed with Meta, with up to 36 Arm Neoverse V3 cores per CPU, 6GB/s memory bandwidth, and TDP under 300W. #Arm #ArmAgiCPU #chips https://newsroom.arm.com/news/arm-agi-cpu-launch

Arm Holdings plc (NASDAQ: ARM) are extending its platform into production silicon products, beginning with the launch of the Arm AGI CPU for AI data centers.

It's clear that AI assisted coding is dividing developers (welcome to the culture wars!). I've seen a few blog posts now that talk about how some people just "love the craft", "delight in making something just right, like knitting", etc, as opposed to people who just "want to make it work". As if that explains the divide.

How about this, some people resent the notion of being a babysitter to a stochastic token machine, hastening their own cognitive decline. Some people resent paying rent to a handful of US companies, all coming directly out of the TESCREAL human extinction cult, to be able to write software. Some people resent the "worse is better" steady decline of software quality over the past two decades, now supercharged. Some people resent that the hegemonic computing ecosystem is entirely shaped by the logic of venture capital. Some people hate that the digital commons is walled off and sold back to us. Oh and I guess some people also don't like the thought of making coding several orders of magnitude more energy intensive during a climate emergency.

But sure, no, it's really because we mourn the loss of our hobby.

I have argued this point in the past, as I'm sure many others, but it's nice to have a term for this concept: hobbyless behavior.

Today we celebrate four years since Apple pulled the ghost CVE prank on us:

Anatomy of a ghost CVE

"The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away."Job 1:21 On March 16 2022, the curl security team received an email in which the reporter highlighted an Apple web page. What can you tell us about this? I hadn't seen it before. On this page with the title "About the security content of macOS Monterey 12.3", … Continue reading Anatomy of a ghost CVE →

""Our capacity to make memories is most affected by this kind of divided attention. We can - just about - attend to several things at once, but we do them badly. In the midst of all the overstimulation we are unable to lay down new memories, which means we don't remember much of what we are doing, either.

A new kind of human behaviour then emerges under this influence, a semi-automated for-profit personality which is being constantly nudged and notified and prompted; which is always seeking attention, always available, often anxious, often angry, afraid, jealous, paranoid, unsure of what of who to believe. The user cannot look up from the screen and notice their surroundings, because this personality, looped in a cycle of primitive fears and instincts, must always exist at peace with the algorithm. The information rewards supplant sensory attention to the actual physical body in the world. We are automating not just out actions, but also our personalities.""
