Diplomatic cables from the United Kingdom diplomat from 2004 about #Poland “being paranoid about Russian intentions” to reabsorb #Belarus and #Ukraine sound a bit different today than they sounded back then, don’t they? 😉

@GossiTheDog It’s fascinating that payment processors and app stores happily bullied Tumblr over female presenting nipples and have kicked adult game creators off of Steam, but have been completely silent on CSAM and misogyny generated on X

I am a Gen X man. And I want to tell you how I realised and learned to identify the “survival laugh.”

First, I noticed it in a social setting. I saw a woman laugh at a dangerously unpredictable man, not from joy, but to disarm him. Then I slowly recognised it everywhere: the forced chuckle in a professional meeting, the charming smile in media. This was never joy. This was a survival tactic. She doesn’t enjoy herself. She is deflecting a blow. She is surviving.

So I started asking myself in all sorts of different situations “Would I be laughing right now?”. The answer was almost always no. I can’t help but wonder how other men don’t see it? But the answer is simple: patriarchy.

I do see genuine, unforced laughter or enjoyment as well. But when I see it, I see it more often than not in queer communities, where we all can feel free from those heteronormative pressures. That contrast makes the truth of the “survival laugh” all the more heartbreaking. To everyone who has had to laugh to stay safe, all I can say: I see you, and I’m sorry.

Focus.de describes a new generation of “better red than dead” growing in #Germany

“It’s better to live in Germany under Putin’s rule than to fight for Germany,” said 18-year-old student Jan Wagner. German students announced a large-scale protest in 90 cities against the return of conscription.

Some other quotes:

“It’s better to flee than to fight”, “We don’t want to be cannon fodder”, “It’s better to live under occupation than to fight”, and “Ukraine should have surrendered instead of defending itself with human lives”.

What these people completely don’t get about #Russia is that it’s not coming to you to somehow peacefully occupy you and let you live your lives. It’s coming to use you as a mobilisation resource - the cannon fodder that it will be not sorry to send to the worst assaults in order to spare their precious Russian youth from Moscow and St Petersburg. We know, because they’re doing 100% that in the occupied Donbas and Zaporizhzhia since 2014.

A funny case study of the 21st century “software engineering” at its best.

As result of #AWS failure, a number of commercial products stopped working that relied on AWS hosted services. Such as the Eight Sleep Pod beds.

Yes, physical beds for sleeping relied on AWS to work. And it was not some kind of extremely sophisticated “AI” processing, but simple schedule “make warmer”, “make colder”, “raise/lower” etc. All that was controlled through AWS.

When AWS stopped working users started complaining that their beds got stuck in weird positions and users were unable to control them. So yes, a bed say in Netherlands stopped working because it could not retrieve instructions from US server which were sent there by the person physically present on said bed.

And the bonus: each bed sent 20 GB of telemetry data to AWS each month.

@m_franceschetti Is 16+gb/mo a normal amount of telemetry? Can you not do any local compute of “get hot” or “get cold” with a multi core processor and multiple gigabytes of memory? Can’t just repeat the previous nights settings? It’s bad enough that you slapped a $200/yr subscription on things,

Fragment of Polish judge ruling justification that had been quoted by PAP:

A just war, bellum iustum, is a war that will ultimately lead to the victory of good. However, it must be waged solely for the purpose of defeating evil and not for conquest. Its aim should be to recover unlawfully lost property or territories, or to defend the homeland. It must be waged out of a desire to achieve peace and cannot be waged out of hatred, lust for revenge or greed, but only out of love for the homeland, justice and loyalty to one’s country. Ukraine undoubtedly meets all these conditions in its fight against Russian aggression and genocide. Ukrainian soldiers and all those acting within the Ukrainian armed forces, including special forces or on behalf of special forces, cannot be considered terrorists or saboteurs. By pursuing the goal of defending their homeland by all means, they weaken the enemy. The blowing up of critical infrastructure of any country in peacetime by hostile special services or terrorist groups is sabotage and constitutes a crime of sabotage. However, the same type of actions taken by armed forces, including special forces during a war, but a just, defensive war, on the critical infrastructure of the aggressor are not sabotage, but military actions of a diversionary nature, which in no way can be considered crimes. In other words, Ukraine, if it was Ukraine and its special forces, including the prosecuted person, which the court does not prejudge, organised an armed mission to destroy enemy pipelines, these actions were not unlawful. On the contrary. They were justified, rational and fair.
