On this day in 1953 British intelligence and the CIA overthrew the elected government of Iran. Shortly after he was elected President in 1951, Mohammed Mossaedgh moved to nationalize Iran’s oil. Two years later he was ousted in a coup and Shah Reza Pahlavi put in power.
