We have added a Mastodon Server | Internet Archive Blogs

My quick #introduction: I'm Molly White (she/her) and I'm a software engineer who's been doing a lot more research and writing lately than software engineering.

I research and write about the cryptocurrency and blockchain industry with a critical perspective, and I run https://web3isgoinggreat.com/ (also on fedi at @web3isgreat). I also write https://newsletter.mollywhite.net/.

When I am writing software, it's mostly on that website, or various Python tools to help me with analysis of hacks/etc.

Web3 is Going Just Great

A timeline recording only some of the many disasters happening in crypto, decentralized finance, NFTs, and other blockchain-based projects.

To the dads in Estonia, Finland, Island, Norway and Sweden (and other countries that celebrate it today) happy #FathersDay

I was hoping to release the new https://pixelfed.org a few days ago

The problem was the new server directory, it's really complex!

I wanted to make this super simple for server admins to submit & update their listings which meant I had to build a submission queue that is integrated into the Pixelfed admin dashboard and also caches (avatar, header, post) images on S3 on our side.

Anyways, it's almost ready and I can't wait 😁

It’s interesting that the biggest communication challenge facing Mastodon communities is explaining that it’s basically a protocol and a network of independent, interconnected servers, which is what the Web, e-mail, even DNS and most of the fundamental services we use on the internet are, and always were.
It just illustrates just how much ‘Big Tech’ proprietary social media platforms swallowed up and walled off, if it’s now difficult to explain what the internet actually is!
It's amazing how on Mastodon even with 1/10th of followers I get way more comments and meaningful interactions on my posts. I feel that no algorithms deciding who gets to see what really makes a difference.
@vivaldibrowser @grantc @atle @ruari , indeed it took us long to get here, but now we are here and we feel right at home.

Thanks to all of you. The technologists among you and and equally those of you who helped form the early communities because without that based all those that came later (ourselves included) would have nobody to chat with.

It feels like the real, original spirite of the Internet again.

So we have been taking a fairly laid back approach to the Fediverse thus far and have not posted too much but don't interpret that as us not being interested.

What we have seen so far we love!

The work that people like @Gargron and others before him have done (such as @cwebber with ActivityPub) is so, so important, both in terms of levelling the field (so that social media is not entirely controlled by large companies) and also in making a better and kinder again place to interact.
