Sarah Stein Lubrano's idea of intellectual social reproduction really resonated with me. It's something more than teaching, it's literally reproducing the ideas. She talks about making videos for the School of Life, which I've watched with my kids. For me it's why I'm doing a podcast, specifically not because it's original but because it's part of a wave of the same idea, rippling through my own communities.

The quote is from the London Review of Books podcast:

But she elaborates here and specifically on the fear of care, and the gendered devaluing of social reproduction:

On Politics: Why you can’t change someone’s mind

Something has gone wrong in the way we discuss politics. If democratic systems since the Athenian polity have been founded on debate, then what does debate do for us today, aside from making us…

Untangling Ourselves is interviews with people who have changed their lives and their communities without coercion. People who've found inspiration without shame.

Season 1 includes episodes about #kpop fandom, ASL interpreting, #mutualaid , #CultDeprogramming, #CommunityChoirs , and #unschooling community building. Some possibilities for Season 2 include trauma-informed dog training, social justice and real estate, donor conceived people's rights, fawning, and neurodiversity-affirming nutrition.

In so many groups and sub-cultures (work cultures, parenting, academics, community organizations, etc) we default to control. It seems to a be a necessary means to an end.

But as people organize against fascism we hear again and again that we need to build the world we want to see: a world where we don't use "power over" to force compliance.

So most recently I interviewed Lee Hoffman, a choir director who manages to lead large groups in practice, performance, and protest without shaming or policing.

In episode 1:2 I interviewed Delia Tetelman about how her experience joining and then deprogramming from a cult in the 80s helps her see and the methods of social coercion in everyday debates and in communities.

Rayne shares a story about inner conflict: growing up autistic and surrounded by both disability rights advocacy and evangelical Christianity. They decided early on to “just take the demerit" and just get on with what they believe is right.

Rayne is an ASL interpreter, consultant, and parenting coach, whose work is continuously informed by the Disability Justice principles and in particular disabled Black, indigenous, and people of color’s perspectives.

Untangling Ourselves

Most people in our capitalist, ableist society were taught that play is never enough, with pressure to perform and set aside their joys and interests. In our increasingly fascist political system, people feel pressured to suppress their values and accept injustice and cruelty.

What does it take to find your joy again? Where do you get the strength to act on your values? And what happens next?

"Untangling Ourselves" is a podcast about how joy and curiosity help people unlearn, deprogram, and find a sense of purpose.
