Me, pontificating at #CSEE2025. I think what I said (or close enough) is "If there's any coherent thread through my research career (and there really isn't), it's wondering why there are so darned many species of insects in the world".

Some of the fine illustrations by Edward Julius Detmold featured in Fabre’s Book of Insects (1921).

I hope this email finds you in the forest.
Do trailer companies have like a perpetual license for 5 songs and are contractually used them in every other trailer?

Urgh, opened up this here fedi thing, saw a post about certain creatures that live in the sea, and of course my brain had to turn it into a song. So now I have "I believe in miracles, where you from, you sexy shrimp?" running through my head.

I can't stress enough how close U.S. science is to the cliff.

"Numbers released in May by the National Science Foundation (NSF) indicate that if Congress approves the cuts to the agency proposed by the White House, the number of early-career researchers it supports could fall by 78%" (via https://www.science.org/content/article/it-s-nightmare-u-s-funding-cuts-threaten-academic-science-jobs-all-levels)

A book bar where you can slam a book shut on the bar after you're finished, shout, "Another!" and the barkeep will choose a new book from your TBR list based on what they think you will most enjoy in the moment like some kind of librarian sommelier. #Bookstodon #UnknownArtist

This absolutely gorgeous #Roman enamelled flask was found in a grave in Buzet (Pinguente), Istria/Croatia.
It's a product of a workshop in Britain or Gaule.
Enamelled objects were typical for the northwestern parts of the Roman Empire.

Dating 2nd century AD.

On display at Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien.
