A bunch of Trump appointees, like Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, the multibillionaire, stand to benefit financially if weather forecasts are privatized. People who can’t afford weather forecasts are going to die.
Downsizing at the National Weather Service appears to be part of an effort by Republicans to privatize such agencies. In some cases, companies poised to step into the void have ties to those tapped by President Donald Trump to run agencies that collect weather data and publish forecasts. The firm Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick ran has an interest in a government contractor that's a satellite company. The Commerce Department says Lutnick has complied with his ethics agreement. Other officials served as lobbyists and consultants for private weather and space companies. Deadly flooding in Texas has drawn a spotlight to staff reductions at the National Weather Service, which provides the public with free weather data.

Not just that solar is now producing more power in California than from burning fossil fuels, but that the amount of power they are getting from methane is steadily decreasing unlike in so many other states.
Why does this success story get so little attention?
The Justice Department said earlier this week that Jeffrey Epstein did not maintain a client list. Here's Mother Jones' story from 2020 on what happened when journalist Leland Nally called every number in the disgraced financier's little black book, which has been circulating since 2009, when a former butler tried to sell it to lawyers representing Epstein's victims.
Dem Sens. Cory Booker and Alex Padilla introduced a bill that would require immigration enforcement officers to display “clearly legible identification.” It would also prohibit officers from wearing “non-medical face coverings.”
Padilla said: “We’ve all seen the videos: masked ICE agents in plainclothes and unmarked vans, grabbing people off the street. No more hiding.”
