Hey Resorts World Las Vegas: It's wrong to treat all hackers as dangerous, and to attempt to penalize people just for owning the tools of the trade. These tools have productive uses, as demonstrated by the massive convention of professional security researchers taking place. #DEFCON32 https://www.404media.co/hotel-to-search-rooms-during-def-con-hacking-conference/
Hotel to Search Rooms During DEF CON Hacking Conference

“As you may or may not know, a well-known hacking convention will be held in Las Vegas during your stay,” Resorts World Las Vegas writes. “We will be conducting scheduled, brief visual and non-intrusive room inspections daily,” it adds.

In my spare time I like to call my friends' employers pretending to be from a rival firm and say my friend has put them down as a reference for a fictional new job. Two have received pay rises and been begged not to leave.

As an archivist, let me say clearly:

Modern copyright law is actively harmful to the preservation and study of our culture.

It harms artists by giving undue power to publishers. It harms artists by limiting remixes. It harms preservation and research efforts.

It's broken. It's bad. It should be massively reformed.

funding for news-- canada tried a link tax (not going well) and now canada trying a tax-- seems more straight forward.

personally I would like to see funding go to open access, non-profit news orgs like propublica.

@eff do you have a question box for inquiring minds? Thanks.
@attoparsec would be cool to mill it into a lighthouse-style fresnel lens, w led’s inside.

I’ve said before that the most precious part of the Web are the pre-Facebook forums run by enthusiasts of specific domains (say, owners of a model of motorbike). There’ll be knowledge there from crusty old riders that means the difference between success and failure at doing what you want to do.

It’s exactly this kind of specific knowledge, like knowing the right steps and way to adjust the valve clearances on a bike, that is threatened by AI content mills, because an LLM doesn’t know if it’s 0.15mm or 15mm, and doesn’t care

THEY DID IT!!!!

My local library built the seed library!

The local Master Gardeners provided a lot of the intitial seeds (oh my gosh we are stocked!!!). They used an old card catalogue to store them. Today's the kickoff!

The idea is you "check out seeds" from the library, plant/grow/harvest, let some go to seed, then "return the seeds" back to the library!

Free seeds for everyone!
