stop making the conversation about work-at-home about productivity

eliminating non-essential worker commutes means less fossil fuels wasted

remote policies increase access for disabled people, especially with chronic illness that flares

LGBT folks and PoC experience less bigotry and it's easier to report bigotry when they do

do some people want hybrid? do some people want on-site? sure

but stop pretending the discussion was about productivity or what employees want

it's about real estate portfolios

There is no benefit to anyone on the left being on twitter.

Nina Turner tweeted "Insulin should be free." some libertarians responded "Nina should pick cotton for free."

Did this obvious racism hurt them? No, they now have more followers than ever. Being over there is just being bait for these extremists to build their network.

Grotesque racist images of Nina, rather than being demoted by the algorithm are being *promoted* since the people posting them paid for blue checks.

Leave.

Since I keep seeing developers use ‘pretty’ IP addresses like ’1.2.3.4’ in example configurations; a reminder that you MUST NOT use publicly routable addresses that you do not control in your code.

Instead, use one of the available 'TEST-NET' IPv4 or IPv6 ranges documented in RFC 6890;

192.0.2.0/24
198.51.100.0/24
203.0.113.0/24

❌ 1.2.3.4
✅ 192.0.2.4

and for IPv6;

✅ 2001:db8::/32

Pass it on to all of your fellow developers, documentation writers, and so forth.

Full RFC for special purpose addresses;

https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/rfc6890/

Reserved for documentation, IPv4 and IPv6;

RFC 6890: Special-Purpose IP Address Registries

This memo reiterates the assignment of an IPv4 address block (192.0.0.0/24) to IANA. It also instructs IANA to restructure its IPv4 and IPv6 Special-Purpose Address Registries. Upon restructuring, the aforementioned registries will record all special-purpose address blocks, maintaining a common set of information regarding each address block.

IETF Datatracker

Reminder that the only safe dummy domains to use are:

- example.com
- example.net
- example.org

And nowadays there's also a safe dummy TLD: .example

These are safe because they are reserved by IANA as as special-use domain names for documentation purposes on direction of IETF in RFC 2606 and RFC 6761.

Any other domain can be registered and as such should _never_ be used as a dummy domain for documentation or as eg. an example in default configs.

With the Reddit thing, it'd be easy to miss what's going on on StackOverflow. Basically:

1. Site owners allowed LLM-generated content.

2. Mods are on strike.

3. Also, back in March it turns out SO turned off the Creative Commons data pipe, which backs up the site to the Internet Archive, in an attempt to confound using SO for training data.

Stack Overflow Moderators Are Striking to Stop Garbage AI Content From Flooding the Site

Volunteer moderators of the forum are striking over a policy that says AI-generated content can practically not be moderated.

About two years ago, I joined the team at Catchpoint to work on one of my favorite tools, WebPageTest. They'd recently acquired the product and wanted to expand on monetizing it and making it part of their platform. Ten months later, we launched Opportunities and Experiments, something I'm very proud of. Now, things are coming to an end, so I'm looking for my next gig.

@Teri_Kanefield connects dots between Timothy McVeigh's bomb in Oklahoma, the allegations of Rudy Giuliani's sexual abuse and the MAGA vision for America.

"The idea that wealthy men and powerful men should have free access to women whom society considered beneath them on the social hierarchy dates far back in human history. For people like Guiliani, Trump, the Insurrectionists, and the 40% of voters who would vote for Trump again, 🎶 those were the days 🎶."

Rudy Giuliani, Timothy McVeigh, and Sexual Abuse - Teri Kanefield

Homegrown by Jeffrey Toobin, opens by comparing the January 6 attack on the Capitol to McVeigh’s attack on Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City. (Notice the small “No Trespassing” sign on the book’s cover. Perfect.) As recounted in Homegrown, McVeigh was calm when his lawyer visited him in prison. He was certain that the attack … Rudy Giuliani, Timothy McVeigh, and Sexual Abuse Read More »
