There is no benefit to anyone on the left being on twitter.

Nina Turner tweeted "Insulin should be free." some libertarians responded "Nina should pick cotton for free."

Did this obvious racism hurt them? No, they now have more followers than ever. Being over there is just being bait for these extremists to build their network.

Grotesque racist images of Nina, rather than being demoted by the algorithm are being *promoted* since the people posting them paid for blue checks.

Leave.

@futurebird Twitter is Nazi propaganda!

@futurebird What helped tip the scale for me was realizing Space Karen is not merely insensitive, he’s actively hateful to a bunch of groups.

Fortunately most of the people I know have bailed and infosec twitter seems to have moved entirely over here.

Still, I wonder whether Mastodon will gain traction beyond early-adopter types like us. Fingers crossed.

@mkb @futurebird the changes in current might not be as apparent to twitter users who don't discuss politics often (or US politics at least) that might explain why majority of twitter users, at least ones i used to follow, didn't ever bother with leaving except maybe in november during the 'twitter is dying for real' scare but it lasted like 2 days total

@natriumchloride @futurebird I was quite political on Birdsite but had mostly wandered away by the time Space Karen was in the picture.

At some point I realized that when I used Twitter I consistently came away angry. At that point it got a whole lot less appealing.

That said, staying off FB and Birdsite-- two of the most popular social networking sites --does limit my knowledge in some ways. I'm just not as plugged in to all the culture bits my friends are.

@mkb

Same here as far as being less political on this site.

I find I do get the important news, however, and appreciate things being taken down several octaves. Blocking so many people on twitter was exhausting.

@mkb yes being away from twitter definitely has its downsides but if mental well-being is compromised then staying away is the best decision. & i can relate to your story, i've also most often preferred to stay away from twitter in the past because it affected me very negatively. I figure that i can manage now because i mostly stay in an isolated okay-ish corner of the site (mostly for art related stuff which is still kind of scarce here unfortunately)

@natriumchloride Since Mastodon doesn’t have The Algorithm we’re all on our own to find accounts to follow which makes it a little daunting at first. Following hashtags (or simply searching on them) is a good way to cast a wider net.

Some art accounts I enjoy are @Matt, @djbaskin, @Curator, @SchlocklusterVideo, and @PixelOccult.

@mkb thanks for the recsssssss 👍👍
@futurebird ideally they should also delete their account too, so they don't go back there. Maybe also block it in DNS settings too if it's that addictive
@ch0ccyra1n @futurebird twitter.com is piholed for my whole network
@futurebird Already gone. The harm is real and I can't justify using it.
@futurebird I've said this for years. Abandon them and give them no one to talk to but each other. They only live to insult anyway.

@futurebird 100%. It's common sense vote with your feet.

I'll go a little bit further. They are "good" Germans. Especially the leftwing/liberal journalists who stay...because that's where their paycheck comes from.

@futurebird I left when Musk took over and it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done. Even then it was a squalid cesspool and I’m sure it’s worse now.

I’d urge anyone to get away if only for their own mental health.

@futurebird some of those racists are probably being paid by Musk to generate clicks too.

@DarkMatterZine

Nina may be getting paid as well. She is untrustworthy.

@futurebird I left Twitter as soon as Musk took over, and won't be back.
@futurebird
I wonder how fast those Libertarians started crying, “Insulin should be cheaper” after they were diagnosed as diabetics?
@futurebird my friend is part if a group that gets targeted on titter but wont leave, I think it is because of the art scene?

@gavinisdie

tumblr has a better "art scene"

IDK.

I think the people who have stay don't realize just how much worse it's gotten over the past year.

@futurebird @gavinisdie it still feels a lot better than what i see on fedi

but i guess i'm way more motivated to look and follow on tumblr because

(a) when other people boost something because i boosted it, i get positive reinforcing feedback too
(b) i seem to be in this particular fandom, or slice of a fandom, that appears to be met on fedi with a deliberate, universal polite forgetting that i ever posted about the thing
(c) queues and the ability to find and appreciate posts from years ago
@futurebird @gavinisdie oops, misunderstood the context and thought we were comparing tumblr and fedi not tumblr and twitter

yeah i dunno twitter only seems superior inasmuch as there are more artists on it and you can post nsfw

@futurebird
That is just fucking stupidity on the part of the so-called "libertarians." While true libertarianism is being on the left with social issues and drugs and on the right with guns and money, that statement is just plain old racism.

There is no reason whatsoever for anyone in their right mind to stay on the neonazi BS platform formerly known as the birdsite. I deleted my account soon after Elmo blew $44 billion of the Saudi's money on it.

@futurebird Looking at this thread: RIP your inbox :/

Mastodon would benefit from being able to un-tag yourself from an argument but I’m not sure how that would be implemented.

Anyway I totally get what you’re saying.

@Haste @futurebird one can at least mute a conversation tho... #ItsSomething I guess...
@kkarhan I used to know how to do this but no longer remember

@Haste So I guess your client doesn't offer you "Mute Conversation" in the options for a toot?

I ise @Tusky on mobile and it liiks like that on my device:

@kkarhan @Tusky

It does not (I’m using the stock iOS app though).

Which is weird because I feel like I have definitely done this before, that first time a post left my orbit and the reply guys descended upon it to feast.

Maybe I just turned off notifications for Mastodon entirely? 🤷‍♀️

@Haste depends.

I'd just recommend to use @ivory on #iOS sonce that's an excellent client amd definitely worth the money.

@Haste otherwise #TwidereX by @mariotaku also supports Mastodon and does support that feature...

@futurebird

"Libertarians have a very simple belief system.

Take the law of the jungle, and apply it to humanity."
SearingTruth

@futurebird TL;DR? There's no benefit to anyone on the left being on Twitter. It's essentially become Parler-lite.
@futurebird no one should be on Twitter. And here we are, not on Twitter.

@futurebird

How to get the government, corporate, journalist & celebrity accounts to leave? Most of them still see it as a golden ticket for their livelihoods. Once they're gone, Twitter will be little more than 4chan.

@futurebird Most other platforms lack the accessibility architecture (ability for ALtText, screenreader and voice-to-text software compatibility, etc.) that Twitter has so Disabled people ( A LOT of us as also BIPOC and/or otherwise highly marginalized ourselves) are reliant on it for community especially since there is still an active mass disabling pandemic raging.
@futurebird Yes! It's gross and I'm spending more time here

@futurebird I would go further, and suggest no ethical business model can remain on the birdsite. Host your own business site or rebuild your following somewhere else.

#leavetwitter

@futurebird Twitter is history in my book. Ever since I couldn't look at anything without being logged in, I'm like screw it.

@futurebird

Why am I shocked? But I am!
ABSOLUTELY disgusting #racism and #misogynoirism

@futurebird Anyone on the left not leaving is either
1. Too selfish/worried about leaving that follower count.
2. Too coward to leave to be called out by Musk.

Very few people are big enough to be in # 2.

#twitter #fascism #selfish

@futurebird People being shitty to other people is always a horrible thing. I feel for the person being maligned. That being said I dont tell people what apps they should use. People can make their own decisions. There are whole groups of nerds on twitter who don't care about politics they just want talk star wars or comics or games. They probably never saw the post you mentioned.
@bassplayer @futurebird this is true but the reality is those groups of nerds are funding the overall company which profits off of the racist abuse outlined in that post. It’s important to make sure people know that’s what they’re doing when they use twitter, so they can make an informed decision over whether to stay.
@Barney My guess is the people who are still there don't see the shittness in their feed or just ignore it.
@futurebird god, im so sorry about the ppl derailing your post :/ what a shit show
@futurebird the overwhelming sense of despair I found on Twitter because of the constant posting of valid issues, and the horrible responses of terrible people being retweeted incessantly made it the only choice, had to leave.
@futurebird Could the blue check accounts be fake accounts as well? It is unethical for any business to operate in this fashion and they will be boycotted for expressing racism online.
@futurebird

💯 🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯

Frankly tired of the listing of excuses for staying.
Meta allowed Myanmar's treatment of the Rohingya & Cambridge Analytical's election influence.
BlueSky is Twitter in sheep's clothing. Dorsey fully embraced the direction Musk took Twitter.
They all allow racism & LGBTQIA+ harassment to flourish
but but but my friends is the social media equivalent of 2016's "But her emails"
@futurebird
I know several "Leftist", "progressives" who refuse to leave Twitter and/or Facebook, because "that would hurt my brand", or "but I've cultivated these connections over many years".
More than a few of these lead the charge in organising boycotts against retail outlets or restaurant chains for racist/misogynist/transmisogynist policies, yet refuse to do the same for social media.
@futurebird
They don't mind calling out anyone still using boycotted companies because not using them would mske their lives harder, but refuse to do the same themselves.
Boycotting Walmart when it is the only supermarket in 20 miles when you don't drive has to be done, apparently, but binning Meta and X - nah, that's too hard and incovenient.
@futurebird I have left. It’s a dystopian hellscape for vile people.

@futurebird I got permabanned because a right-winged didn't liked a survey and said that they should "Clean the scum". I suggested that if he wanted to do that, he should suicide himself. I got banned, he didn't.

I can appeal but they can fuck themselves.
