I'm a nerd, railfan, and a dad. I fix servers for fun and profit! I've been biking a lot, and sometimes I manage to say something witty
@Ashedryden why do you have to call my wife and I out like that?!
@paco if the built-in graphs from the router suck, can you export the data via snmp to a network monitoring server? I've previously used LibreNMS and gotten good results. I even was able to observe Patch Tuesday's impacts on my lab network through it (initially via a slight panic as I saw a large amount of data entered the network in the middle of the night when no clients were online)
@dougiec3 @randahl there's some speculation that drones (both air and water based) have made large navies obsolete. Why spend hundreds of millions of dollars on a single warship when you could instead spend $30k on a remotely guided dingey loaded with explosives and relatively reliably sink whatever ship you crash it into
@tomgauld.bsky.social I always appreciate how every single holiday ad and movie manages to make fake snow that looks entirely wrong, but every time it's an entirely different kind of fake snow that looks wrong in an entirely new way
@ozdreaming @killyourfm @coffeethrowaway @VulcanTourist Ripping a large CD collection is honestly a zen experience. You're opening every jewel case, looking at all of the cover art and case inserts, remembering memories associated with each album, each artist, all while in the background you hear the mechanical whirring of the disc drive and then the tray popping out, hungry for you to load the next disc, all while playing tracks you may not have listened to in years while you check the rip quality. Its a brilliant way to spend an afternoon or 5

@penwing @killick I greatly enjoyed reading Well's works. The Time Machine, War of the Worlds and The Invisible Man were all brilliant and didn't require any reminders that "this was written over a hundred years ago and nobody had written like this before so hold your tongue"

Honestly Lovecraft was enjoyable as well (specifically At The Mountains of Madness and the earlier Call of Cthulhu) but they're also interesting to dive into with the knowledge that he was a turbo-racist and terrified of everything

Tidings of comfort and joy will continue until morale improves.
@anders @selfhost sounds like a very good cheap choice for a lab box! I currently run 5 Minecraft servers, my NAS, media server, etc. off a similar box (HP Elite desk with a 4th gen i5) and mostly I'm limited by memory capacity more than anything
@ascentale @grammasaurus @bikenite not a bike event, but I ran in a #5k last month in #Madison #Wisconsin that is run as part of the Christmas lights opening ceremony. They turned the lights on at the same time as the firing pistol, then upon arriving at the finish there was a steel drum player playing Christmas music and walking tacos to enjoy. Just a fun time all around, plus running onto the isthmus was pretty fun
@NickEast_IndieWriter @bookstodon @books @humor @humor@lemmy.world @aiop right now my books are organized by intended reading order in a pile, with "currently reading" on top, "intending to read next" below that and "gave up on reading" pushed to the back and about to fall off the table. I need to put up a bookshelf outside of the kids' room now that I'm actually reading more than 1 book a year
