Everyone says: plant bird friendly yards. Let the grass grow wild they say. Don't cut it. Let it go to seed. Well not mowing sounds good, and this fall I caught one of my resident song sparrows taking advantage of this advice. Full frame please, to see that grain of grass. #birds #wildlife #ecology
@schoppik we should all “maintain a high index of clinical suspicion”.

Did evolution create a tradeoff between walking upright and childbirth? For my new column I wrote about a new debate about an old ideas. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/30/science/childbirth-evolution-obstetrical-dilemma.html
An Evolutionary Debate on the Risks of Childbirth

Scientists are revisiting an influential theory that the evolution of big brains made human childbirth risky.

A project that started with Davi Bock and Wei Lee developing the TEMCA for the mouse visual cortex in Clay Reid’s lab (Bock et al. 2011 https://www.nature.com/articles/nature09802), then Bock moving to #HHMIJanelia and developing the instrument much further to deliver the #FAFB volume (Zheng et al. 2018 https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0092867418307876 ), and then the Seung, Murthy and Jefferis labs automatically re-registering, segmenting and annotating the whole volume via #FlyWire and more.

Extraordinary!

@tuthill this is an excellent data point, thank you!
@sls @schoppik yeah i already suggest alternates. just wondering if i am lazy and it is normal to have 1-2 manuscript reviews on one's plate at all times.
the real generational divide is hard-copy paper/grant submissions.
@schoppik I submitted one Friday and got a request for another one Saturday, and then 3 more on Tuesday. All different journals. And I did ad hoc study section today! I think I need to say no to everything for awhile?
@bahome lol not quite. if that were true i’d have more lab members to help me with them!
