While students and faculty, under the guise of their own and the university’s safety, will no longer be allowed to access TikTok via university WiFi they can still carry a firearm on campus and in classrooms. https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/tiktok-banned-university-of-texas-austin-campus-1234662400/

Today’s piece about Elon Musk’s Twitter by @caseynewton @zoeschiffer @alexeheath is incredible.
The level of dysfunction inside that company is much worse than what I could have imagined… https://www.theverge.com/23551060/elon-musk-twitter-takeover-layoffs-workplace-salute-emoji

As a marketer, I found this bit particularly chilling:

Extremely Hardcore

Twitter’s staff spent years trying to protect the social media site against impulsive billionaires who wanted to use the reach of its platform for their own ends, and then one made himself the CEO.

It’s rare for me to enjoy a LinkedIn post this much, especially something this old from some random VC I’ve never heard of before.

But my husband found it and boy is this relevant right now… see screenshot below

Third-party Twitter clients like Tweetbot and and Twitterrific were critical to the success of Twitter and their users are some of the company's most valuable.

Both deserved better than to have the Twitter API shut off on no notice with no explanation. My thoughts and some history over on @macstories: https://www.macstories.net/stories/twitter-intentionally-ends-third-party-app-developer-access-to-its-apis/

Twitter Intentionally Ends Third-Party App Developer Access to Its APIs

Late yesterday, The Information reported that it had seen internal Twitter Slack communications confirming that the company had intentionally cut off third-party Twitter app access to its APIs. The shut-down, which happened Thursday night US time, hasn’t affected all apps and services that use the API but instead appears targeted at the most popular third-party

Almost 24 hours later and still no official/unofficial info from inside Twitter. I'm going to continue as if this was all done on purpose.

What now? Ivory goes into hyper mode with just the absolute minimum 3-4 things that have to be done finished up and then off to Apple. Probably going to be a bunch of things I'm not super happy with but I guess we'll fix it in post.

Hopefully everyone knows what we're capable of and can live with some, hopefully not long lived, rough edges/missing features.

Toyota took classic AE86s and filled them with batteries and hydrogen - https://www.theverge.com/2023/1/13/23554387/toyota-ae86-bev-h2-hydrogen-electric-concepts
Toyota took classic AE86s and filled them with batteries and hydrogen

Toyota restomoded AE86s, adding an electric motor to one, and a hydrogen system to the other. Like many converted 80s cars, they look incredible.

An investor and venture capitalist, Pelosi's husband is one of the most prodigious traders connected to a lawmaker. He's made tens of millions of dollars in stock trades during the past few years, congressional records indicate.

Nancy Pelosi's husband lost $500,000 selling Tesla stock in December

In total, Pelosi reported losing over $2.5 million in the final weeks of 2022, in a potential move to lower his tax burden.

I was just fired. If you know someone hiring staff level software engineers, preferably in a #sre, #devops, or #PlatformEngineering space, I'd love to talk.

I'm looking for US remote positions, fwiw. And I can refer some really excellent engineers at all experience levels.

Edit: thank you for the boosts. I've been interviewing and I may have offers soon. I'll follow up on leads if I need to extend my search.

There are two pieces of news in this one:

https://www.wsj.com/articles/facebook-politics-controls-zuckerberg-meta-11672929976?mod=tech_lead_pos2

1.     In late 2021, with zero fanfare, Facebook began changing newsfeed worldwide to exclude comments and reshares in how it promotes politics, societal and health-related content.

2.     This wasn’t enough for FB’s leadership and board. Late in 2021, they asked Facebook to move forward with zero-weighting ALL civic content in newsfeed. Facebook wanted out of politics.

Facebook Wanted Out of Politics. It Was Messier Than Anyone Expected.

Hitting mute button on political content recommendations brought unintended consequences, documents show.

Oops! I did again, @[email protected]:

I created a Twitter account pretending to be @[email protected] (with his permission) and applied for Blue “verification.”

And once again, Twitter took my $8, asked zero questions and gave the fake account a blue checkmark.

Twitter said it fixed ‘verification.’ So I impersonated a senator (again).

Elon Musk said Twitter would begin authenticating users who pay $8 for Blue. Our tech columnist was still able to get a checkmark for an impostor Sen. Ed Markey.
