"What I’m finding most satisfying about Mastodon, and I’m seeing a lot of other journalists feel this, is that it actually forces you to ask and confront some of these questions and to make active choices. Even if Mastodon were to remain Twitter’s very tiny stepbrother, I would still like to be part of a Mastodon journalist community because I think we got lazy as a field, and we let Mark Zuckerberg, Jack Dorsey, and, god help us, Elon Musk decide..."

Mastodon’s Moment – The Markup

A conversation with Adam Davidson

This reminds me of when Prince died and everyone in New York City was driving around with their windows down, blasting his music, and it was like, we could have been doing this the whole time.
And realistically the Twitter I'm sad about losing is a Twitter that hasn't really existed in years. I've been on there for over fourteen years and the change (I don't wanna just say "decline" but it kind of was) has been gradual but dramatic. I doubt it will go away completely any time soon, but there's no going back to its "best"

I like Doctorow's article here. And one of the admitted understated switching costs of moving to Mastodon - so far - is that you can't share articles quickly on this platform.

Sites/browsers don't seem to be built for it yet.

Social Quitting

My man paid $44 billion for the world to dunk on him. Happy Friday.

When I Bookmark something, it's just for me.

When I Like something, it's just for me and the person who made the post.

When I boost something, it's because I want to share it with others.

There's no software in the background recording and evaluating my behavior so it can decide the best ads to show me, and what I should see or not see in my feed to increase my engagement.

It's pretty nice not being the product anymore and just enjoying the web again.

#Mastodon & #TwitterMigration FTW

For all the new #TwitterMigration folks ...welcome! I know it's a wild time, but take a moment to curate and build up your follows here; reevaluate the kind of people and content you want to engage with, and then start having discussions...it can be really refreshing :)

Also, if your instance is running mastodon 4.x+, you can follow hashtags (some clients like tusky may not support it yet...the default mastodon app is great to also have!)

Watch #FediTips for great info 🎉

Oops. I accidentally deleted the original toot. I was trying to issue an update on my toot about twitter censorship and didn’t realize deleting a reply toot would bork the whole thread 🤦🏾‍♀️

From what I've gathered, it seems that Twitter blocking joinmastodon.com is a ~special case~ as the domain used to resolve to a spam website. I'm not sure how long the .com domain has been pointed to the official joinmastodon.org but recommend sharing the .org instead. #mastodon #twittermigration #Twitter

A lot of us moved our blogging to places like Twitter, because it was convenient and easier to be seen.

If this meltdown leads people to going back to their blogs, or at least learning the essential downside of centralization, that will be a positive outcome.
