Collector of trivia, sometimes for profit.

Was feeling unsure about how to process all the #zelda #totk hype, so to temper expectations I looked up IGN's 2011 review of Skyward Sword, where they called it, I kid you not, "the greatest Zelda game ever made".

Voice actors needed! – Gugames.eu

Bit of a long shot, but could my good mastodon follower folk give me some boosts?

I'm starting work on a documentary podcast series about the future of space; renewable/sustainable technologies, commercialism in the sector and the public's perception of it all.

I'm hoping to connect with people who know space to complement my client's contacts, so any signal boosting would be appreciated!

Wool Sower Wasp Galls
White Oak

A tiny wasp stings the stem and deposits eggs. The eggs command the tree to grow a specific structure that encases and protects the larvae. Inside the gall the larvae look like seeds packed side by side with fuzzy tails. The cycle takes two years to complete. Though strangely parasitic, it doesn’t hurt the trees.

Another wasp evolved an ovipositor to sting the larvae within the gall and deposit eggs on THEM. Parasites have parasites.

Imagine being someone who watches a Facebook ad on YouTube and actually follows it back to the site. No one thinks Facebook is better for finding creators than YouTube, man. Why that company hasn't just come out with a new platform is beyond me.

Just watched Steve Jobs (2015) and even though some have always looked on these self-mythologizing "geniuses" with suspicion, I think there has been a cultural shift in how these stories/characters hit before and after #Elon.

When one of these types fails so publicly, it really does make you look at all personality cults of wealthy, abusive, disputably competent ideas men as iterations of the same strange collective impulse to mythologize those in power. #movies #musk #apple

#Substack's #app has recently decided to make itself unusable by shortening all links with ellipses. Not sure why this change was rolled out but given Substack's particular style, it renders many subscriptions illegible. This from @caseynewton's Platformer, for example:

Life expectancy for US citizens is dropping fast, and is now lower than that of Cuba, Lebanon, or Czechia.

So @internetarchive scanning books for their digital library is copyright infringement:

But OpenAI slurping all of that to train a model that then can generate text and put actual authors out of business (already happening with copywriters), is not.

Figures, there are no $billions of VC / corporate money behind Internet Archive, why would anyone want to support a public service, right? 🤦‍♀️

IA ≠ AI, know the difference!

The Fight Continues - Internet Archive Blogs

Today’s lower court decision in Hachette v. Internet Archive is a blow to all libraries and the communities we serve. This decision impacts libraries across the US who rely on controlled digital lending to connect their patrons with books online. It hurts authors by saying that unfair licensing models are the only way their books […]

I work with one news outlet in the US that insists that no #migration story be aired without the voices of migrants. It's an admirable policy in theory but the reality is few migrants want to share their trauma for the benefit of making a story more engaging to a US audience's passing interest. The effect is that they under-cover the repeated violations of international law in Italy re: migrant boats, and audiences are worse informed. Frustrating. #journalism https://www.rainews.it/maratona/2023/03/migranti-continuano-gli-sbarchi-a-lampedusa-26-marzo-2023-33dad9c2-b394-4f5b-89eb-a6119dc31d3f.html
