@cR0w @mttaggart "Mom said I'd fall and crack my head open if I skate off this sweet jump, guess I'll go ask Dad"
@jay_peper @TomF @simon_brooke @catgirlQueer @vashti I'm still not sure I grasp it. Is it the same as expressing the "width" of an electron in light-femtoseconds or something?
@bagder what does total volume over time look like? High/critical reports are down as a percentage, but is the total volume down as well?

This post fully captures why I 💙 MCP servers so much (as noted, it has nothing to do with "AI").

@RetroHeart extra thicc sky daddy uwu
@directhex I missed where that was a campaign promise, but that's like ~6% of the entire population.

Sigh. I'm still so bothered by that "chatgpt rots your brain" paper BECAUSE it correctly positions some of the compelling questions we have about LLM usage but then does us all a disservice in its approach, pushy interpretation, and inappropriate or misleading framing of brain evidence and measurement of human problem-solving, imo

I am asking myself: what studies would *I* design to evaluate people's usage of LLMs in keeping with learning science and without neurohype?

Watching Microsoft’s robots telling Microsoft’s other robots that they need to agree to Microsoft CLAs in between Microsoft’s developers begging Microsoft’s robots to actually understand the problems they’re trying to fix in Microsoft's platform code on Microsoft's version-control website is kind of amazing.

This is definitely the future Terry Gilliam promised us.

@the_etrain but if there are two ancient squid monsters going at it on a hovercraft, we still have a ballgame. And the basis for a new romance novel series.
@kajer am I crazy or is there not actually an advisory for this yet

@mhoye This looks really weird. Could you elaborate on what this all means?
@mhoye @dadakopf This is horrible. Like a total moron in the team.
This needs some serious fine-tuning before this gets anywhere near usable.

@n3wjack @mhoye @dadakopf At least team members that could fit that designation wouldn't be pushing these changes to the pull requests.

They might say "I don't know how to do that.", but they won't say "Problem fixed" when it clearly isn't.

@AT1ST @n3wjack @dadakopf If this was an overeager, underskilled intern you'd be having a quiet conversation with their manager using sentences like "growth opportunity" and "understanding their extended impact" and with an shared, unspoken understanding that the kid is on thin ice.
@mhoye @AT1ST @n3wjack @dadakopf The only saving grace here is that AIUI the .NET people specifically signed up for this, so, well, they're getting the dogfooding they wanted.

@kevinriggle @mhoye @n3wjack @dadakopf As I read it, it was that they *had* to use A.I. *some* way, and this is how they chose to do it.

Like having family insist that they eat broccoli, and getting to choose between cooked and uncooked broccoli, or either of those with cheese sauce.

@AT1ST @mhoye @n3wjack @dadakopf As a performance art piece about why that's a terrible idea, I approve of their choice.
@n3wjack @mhoye @AT1ST @dadakopf @kevinriggle
I think this is far more sinister:
Accustom the audience to the idea that LLMs have legal personhood and can be accountable for their output -
absolving creators and operators.

@FrohlichMarcel @n3wjack @mhoye @dadakopf @kevinriggle I suspect they don't want to aim for legal personhood, because then they become accountable for training the LLM.

And/or the copyright infringements that the LLM does, under their "Employment".

@mhoye @AT1ST @dadakopf @kevinriggle @n3wjack
It is about normalizing unsupervised agency of LLMs, I believe. Even if it sounds ridiculous. By introducing the idea of LLMs being a contract party as a relevant frame, the success is just that, even if the surrounding story is absurd.
@FrohlichMarcel @mhoye @dadakopf @kevinriggle @n3wjack Well, it's doing a...*type* of job in that aspect, I suppose...
@AT1ST @FrohlichMarcel @mhoye @dadakopf @n3wjack whatever these people believe, the effect is that I think they’re ridiculous
@kevinriggle @FrohlichMarcel @mhoye @dadakopf @n3wjack (That was my intended implication - that it certainly was doing a *bad* job at arguing that A.I. should be unsupervised.)
@kevinriggle @mhoye @AT1ST @dadakopf Yeah, I guess this is what it's mostly about. Dogfooding.
Kind of funny it's out there for all to see though. 😂
@AT1ST @n3wjack @mhoye @dadakopf You'd be surprised. Until recently, there was a guy in my team who really had no idea, but liked to sell himself as if he did. He was constantly trying to merge completely broken code into production.
@mhoye @dadakopf Looking at the second pull request, I knew there wasn't enough popcorn in the world when I saw that it was "Fix a regex".
@mhoye CLAs are just tools invented by lawyers to exploit human contributions. Seeing a bot get blocked feels like a bit of karmic payback aimed at the legal team.
@BenAveling I didn’t know that one. It’s the museum of horrors ;-) @mhoye
@adulau It is both extremely funny and absolutely awful.
@mhoye
@mhoye We’re all in it together!
@Meyerweb "My complication had a little complication."
@mhoye glad bots agree with me that they shouldn't bother with a CLA before submitting a change
@mhoye can you caption that image? you know, it's in the culture of the fediverse to do so
@mhoye @lanodan Exactly why I have @markov set up with a list of bots to ignore.

@mhoye

sorceror's apprentice done in git... this timeline is beyond diseased and broken...

@mhoye

Given Microsoft's position—“Copilot has a pre-litigated fair use right [0] to regurgitate FOSS w/out a license”— I'm surprised its LLM didn't respond w/ quotes saying its lawyers say it's a “settled issue” & it needn't sign CLA.

(BTW,  #OpenSource Initiative director – day job: #Microsoft's lawyer – Justin Colannino actually told me above “fair use settled issue” bullshit to my face.)

If Software is My Copilot, Who Programmed My Software?

Software freedom is our goal. Copyleft is a strategy to reach that goal. That tenet is oft forgotten by activists. Copyleft is even abused to advance proprietary goals. We too often see concern about the future of copyleft overshadow the necessary fundamental question: does a particular behavior or trend — and the inevitable outcomes of those behaviors and trends — increase or decrease users’ rights to copy, share, modify, and reinstall modified versions of their software? That question remains paramount as we face new challenges.

@mhoye Wanting to give back to the community that they've bet all their money on, Microsoft is the first company to open Github repo based chatrooms where lonely bots can find companionship with other lonely bots.
@mhoye paging @kcarruthers ... AI going excellent, I see. Well spent resources.
@mhoye we reached the good ending
@mhoye Pratchett. You're thinking of Terry Pratchett.
@StompyRobot you should watch Brazil.

(@ @mhoye, I know the link is in other replies, but you should probably edit it into the original post )

@mhoye Can you please share the link to the issue?
@mhoye Is this what "Fail fast" means ? 😆
MS has been doing that for years .. (release before testing)
@mhoye maybe a bit of Douglas Adams by way of Sirius Cybernetics too

@mhoye

bot: "you need to agree to the micro$quish CLA"

monty-python-bot (in bad french accent): "i told him we already got one"

@mhoye

if you haven't seen "Brazil"

now would be a good time to watch it

@mhoye If you always wondered why Idiocracy had all this idiotic tech despite the people there being absolute morons... well, here is your Answer. They still had Copilot (now with more... Molecules!).

@mhoye

*computer voice* Eeeeeevery life is saaaaaacred.

@mhoye @rk reminds me of the great novel "Service Model" too

@mhoye

And they laid off humans for this.

@mhoye @neurovagrant Now I understand why the theme song from Gilliam’s Brazil has been stuck in my head for months.

@mhoye

Just wait till it asks for a 27B/6.
