Allow me to rant about RTO.
Our CEO announced a hardline return to office policy about a month ago. In the announcement, he said one of the quiet parts out loud by claiming we had office space we were paying for that was going unused.
And it's not even hybrid; he wants everybody in the office every day.
I'm fortunate that I'm coded in HR as being a permanent remote employee. They also can't make me come in unless they want to pay for travel and hotels since the closest corporate office is a 6 hour drive away.
We have two open positions. HR is forcing us to only hire people who can go to an office.
We had an exemplary candidate. She had all the skills we needed, had a personality and work ethic that meshed well with ours and our corporate culture. She's in the process if getting her PhD in a cyber security related field.
But we lost her because of RTO. She wasn't going to go into an office.
We had trouble getting qualified candidates even when they could be 100% remote. Now that they have to go into an office, we are fucked.
RTO makes no sense. It makes no sense from a personnel retention perspective. It demonstrably lowers productivity.
We already track projects and time. We already have goals and deliverables. We have KPIs and all the things needed to verify someone is doing their job.
I do not get it.
I do not understand it.
