Hello. Computer geek living in Northern VA. I enjoy #Python and #ThomasMerton. Looking to connect with interesting and fun people. Current interests include #StarTrek, and watching movies of musicals (my partner has decided I need education on these things but enjoy that and her). I consider myself #leftist but am in a learning process about that.
@jbz I am worried that they will give the Yellowstone guy (who seems to have created half the series on Paramount right now) a Star Trek series. I am sure that won't be weird at all.

I think I need to put into my talk this line that keeps running through my head

So many leaders want people to trust them, which is exactly backwards

In organizations, positions are typically appointed through the hierarchy and authority of the organization. However, like trust, "leadership" is earned: slowly built and quickly lost.

Asking how to earn trust means admitting you have failed, and more importantly means committing to a change. If you don't uphold those changed behaviors, you will simply lose trust again and consequently fail as a leader no matter how the organization helps you fail upwards.

@JessTheUnstill As I understand it, it's effectively Mastodon (or at least IIRC that's what the website for it says) so let's call them toots just to aggravate him.
@nixCraft AI is wonderful until it starts losing Amazon profit.

I'm also very much for @pluralistic 's proposition that countries outside the US should use Trump's tarrif setting precedent; breaking trade agreements, as reasonable justification to unburden ourselves from all the DRM legislation forced on us by US for one-way value extraction. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/jan/10/trump-beginning-of-end-enshittification-make-tech-good-again
Trump may be the beginning of the end for ‘enshittification’ – this is our chance to make tech good again

The US president is weaponising tech, but his tariffs and Brexit provide a surprising opportunity to gain back digital control of our lives, says science fiction author, activist and journalist Cory Doctorow

If you respect yourself I greatly recommend simply not watching any cable TV news for the foreseeable future. Or ever, really. You'd be better informed binging the muppet show.

@jcrabapple haven't looked into that, I work around it for now. There probably is.
@jcrabapple I use it and like it, the only gripe I have is that new tab by default goes to their search field on the page rather than stay in the address bar. It is an annoyance.

Hey, USian Democratic elected officials:

This is what we want •you• to be saying, believe in, and follow thru on.

Do this. Put it on repeat. That’s how you get (at least some of) the 1/3rd of registered voters who don’t vote to get off their asses and vote in the midterms.

Ignore the Democratic Strategists and their tired old ideas that are about keeping the status quo.

Enough is enough.
