What if we just consider “desire to own an AR-15” a mental health issue?

The debt limit sprains the both sides brain.

Read Dan Froomkin:

"Extremist Republicans have been enabled by media coverage that tries to split the difference, and treats what is essentially a hostage crisis created exclusively by one side as a normal, two-sided partisan squabble. Indeed, our top political reporters now insist that the onus is on Biden to solve the problem."

Republicans threaten to tank economy. Media blames Biden. - Press Watch

The nation is not “barreling toward default,” nor is it “careening,” or even “drifting” there. It is being pushed there by Republicans.

Here are my thoughts on the mess over at C&ENews, where the ACS in their own words is dismantling the journalism and making it into a corporate brochure for the society. #chemistry #chemiverse #journalism @jkemsley https://holdenthorp.substack.com/p/loss-of-editorial-independence-at
Loss of editorial independence at C&ENews is tragic

User Generated Content and the Fediverse: A Legal Primer

A growing number of people are experimenting with federated alternatives to social media like Mastodon, either by joining an “instance” hosted by someone else or creating their own instance by running the free, open-source software on a server they control. It’s never not going to be funny that after years of hype about crypto-metaverse-subscriptions disrupting web2 incumbents, the backstop to Twitter’s sudden implosion was volunteers recreating Usenet with RSS.
Has anyone come up with a "Community #Mastodon Beginners Toolkit" yet -- spelling out how much tech savvy is needed to start a secure local "instance" and wean neighbors, #LocalGovernment, schools and #newspapers off not only Twitter but the too-easy-to-use Facebook?
Maybe some of the Web-domain-host companies are getting into this already, but I haven't gone looking yet.
Sad to see colleges and newspapers using oligarch-owned social media, not hosting their own or encouraging non-profits.
I can follow my city’s mayor, public safety feeds, and local politicians on Facebook or Twitter but they ought to run a mastodon server on social.NewtonMa.gov imho. I wonder if there are other cities which have done this, or set up “official” accounts broadcasting local fire, police, roadwork, health info on existing servers. Ad-supported commercial social media should be history. How can I convince them to take the plunge?

Oh, wow, Tom Lehrer has released all of his songs into the public domain. Apparently also his website will shut down "at some date in the not too distant future" so now's a good time to download directly.

"In short, I no longer retain any rights to any of my songs.
So help yourselves, and don’t send me any money."
