Feeling great. Might pick up a new federated app later. Got recs?

Only days before the great #twittermigration I was explaining to a young family member how I was feeling a real sense of loss. This was the first #ElectionCycle in years where I didn’t follow everything across all things social.

I tried to share what we all thought the web was capable of when it was new. It felt like I was speaking a different language.

The #fediverse is all WIN.

For Twitter folks who are brand new to Mastodon

Few pointers from a veteran of <checks notes> 2 weeks:

1️⃣ BOOST generously: If you see a Toot you like & want others to see it, boost (RT) it. Unlike Twitter, liking it does nothing for visibility

2️⃣ HASHTAGS are important, use liberally. They're the only way to make content discoverable by search

3️⃣ Use alt-text for images/gifs for accessibility

4️⃣ Err towards content warnings - not just for obv triggering content; helps keep feeds uncluttered

I will give big points to the first news organization, big or small, that:
* Sets up an instance for its newsroom,
* Sets up an instance for the community it serves,
* Enables rel=me for staff,
* Creates a boost-on-Mastodon sharing function,
* Enhances that function so headlines/images (with alt-text) appear in the toot,
* Covers the Fediverse as more than a geeky curiosity or alt-Twitter,
* Listens to and joins in the conversation here.

Current #nonfiction read: Learning in Public by Courtney E. Martin. I don’t have kids to send to school but I #teach and have worked with many #teachers across the US. I know the difference these choices make.

This is a really thoughtful book. No effort at “solutions journalism” just a commitment to sit with the problem(s). #bookstodon #PublicSchools #Racism
