@aral ’s post about the cost to instance maintainers has me thinking.
He rightly noted we incur data traffic costs for instance maintainers to pay. Big tech has us paying via surveillance capitalism. But here it’s a volunteer sharing their server/bandwidth.
Mastodon feels like a “place” but it’s an infrastructure akin to the post. It has a cost that is exponential in its data & electricity/environ costs too. Yikes!
