Reminder that if you also regularly get intrusive thoughts like "I'm sorry for being such a shitty person", you shouldn't give it much weight. Broad, unfocused guilt like that doesn't make you a better person, just a hurting one.

Try to take concrete steps to improve youself if you need to, but beyond that? Cut yourself some slack. You're suffering enough.

I can get pretty close to the feeling I want with a heavy stack of blankets, and some big plush toys all around me. Maybe I should just get a weighted blanket...
All I want is to be lying down in snugly fitting, dark box. Just big enough to be comfortable, walls gently touching me on all sides. Reassuring, firm reminders that the outside world is just a distant hum, at least for a bit.

What's fedi's favorite standard, specification, or any similar, formal or semiformal, widely agreed upon set of rules and procedures?

Mine has to be RFC 2119, I wish every technical spec I had to read or write followed comparably unambiguous wording.

The little mouse spots you. It scurries away, squeaking!

I really dislike "gen" talk. The world is full of assholes and full of lovely people and full of the ignorant, and it always has been, with the categories only correlating to birth year in the minds of folks who are too bubbled-up to get out and discover strangers.

I class the vast majority of statements about gen-this and gen-that and gen-the-other down there with astrology and Kiersey-Bates.

I always love writing small, purpose-made software for very specific needs. Did some side work to generate gcode for an unusual CNC machine, and a few hundred lines of rather stupid but well-aimed code are working better than any of the commercial software they've thrown at the problem.

It feels really nice to be told someone's workflow went from several hours to a few minutes, and it only took a couple days to write it.

Trying out wearing earplugs for the first time while out in a loud environment, and they're pretty nice. Even when none of the noises are quite loud enough to be uncomfortable, it's still so much easier to think, and it's a lot less tiring in the long run. And I might actually be able to go to a club now and not have to hang back in the quietest corner!

For my first thread on this account about transgender inclusion beyond privileged tech bubbles, a topic dear to my heart:

"Are It/Its pronouns for real? Aren't they dehumanizing?"

“If one already knows the thought that one wants to express, it is possible to assess whether text generated by AI captures it correctly. However, this hope neglects that the process of writing is not—or not usually—a mechanical one, whereby we put on paper thoughts that we already possess. Rather, writing is often itself the means by which we discover what we think.”
