Goodbye! 👋

I have not updated my Starlink numbers in a while, and great flying fuckballs, is it ever bad. We are now up to 9,422 Starlink satellites in orbit, out of 14,046 total active satellites.

1,446 Starlinks have reentered and added their 500-1500kg of computers, batteries, solar panels, and aluminum frame to the upper atmosphere (and at least one has hit the ground).

Safari 26 is here!!! Anchor Positioning, Scroll-driven animations, High Dynamic Range images, the new HTML <model> element, the all-new Digital Credentials API, SVG icon support, WebGPU, WebKit in SwiftUI, every site can be a web app on iOS and iPadOS, and much more.

WebKit Features in Safari 26.0

We’re happy to share with you what’s arriving in Safari 26.0!

WebKit

Have you ever wished the browser would look at a background color and pick black or white for the text — whichever one provides more contrast? Now, the `contrast-color()` function in CSS does just that.

How to have the browser pick a contrasting color in CSS

Have you ever wished you could write simple CSS to declare a color, and then have the browser figure out whether black or white should be paired with that color?

WebKit

Have you ever tried to remove margins from content with tricks like `:first-child { margin-block-start: 0; } :last-child { margin-block-end: 0;}` only to feel icky, knowing like the code is fragile and just waiting for the layout to break with different HTML?

Try `margin-trim` instead.

Read all about it in our latest article: https://webkit.org/blog/16854/margin-trim/

Easier layout with margin-trim

If you write a lot of CSS, you are familiar with those moments when you aren’t quite sure how to accomplish what you want to accomplish.

WebKit

Make websites? Are you reading webkit.org? We published 6 articles in the last 5 weeks — aiming for at least one a week from now on. Teaching you all about new technology, proposals for the future, and what’s coming in Safari.

• lh units
• shape()
• text-wrap: pretty
• Safari 18.4
• Item Flow
• Declarative Web Push

Plus release notes for Safari Technology Preview every other week.

What should we write about next?

Almost 4 #StarLink satellites fall back to Earth every day and they rain out aluminum oxide into the stratosphere which destroys the ozone layer. These satellites are more and more problematic with every article I read. Edit: corrected microsatellites to satellites per @sundogplanets 's correction that these are larger satellites than microsatellites.

Playing around with a corner-shape implementation for WebKit. Some of the path math is quite involved!
Every time I try to use Inkscape on macOS it ends in tears.
