Just a 30something Canadian dude from #VancouverIsland who's into #RetroComputing (mainly old #Apple / #Mac stuff), #Programming, and general #Technology enthusiast. Also love to #Travel!

I wrote a Mastodon client for vintage Mac computers, #Macstodon, which you can get from here: https://github.com/smallsco/macstodon

Occasionally I’ll post about #Anime and #Gaming, especially #ZenlessZoneZero and #HonkaiStarRail.

I boost a lot. Boosts are not endorsements.

You know that meme about the ridiculous names of business productivity software? This is an actual notification I received at work this morning:
Are the Americans OK?

an earnest blog post about the old mac I just bought

Trying To Find Meaning In Owning An Old Mac

My Dad got to middle age and restored a classic car. I got to middle age and following that pattern with a computer instead.

This is what we should be building.

As promised: PartUtil a limited partition editor that makes dual booting DOS and Win 9x without a boot manager easier.

Hide, unhide and make partitions active. Save and restore MBRs to files. And a few extra tricks that help with initial setup. Runs on any PC compatible and any version of DOS. Source code included.

(I've been using an earlier version of this for years on a PCjr. This is a complete rewrite that is finally worth sharing.)

Just come across this legend (again) saved on a HDD. Gets posted often, but there always someone who hasn't seen it.

Not to be alarmist but the Power Mac G4 Cube is now a quarter of a century old

The cat trees are blooming early this year.
@Natasha_Jay Pussywillow, I believe.
@wilpercy Wait til you see fox glove in bloom
@wilpercy @Natasha_Jay TIL, that in some other languages the willow flowers also have name related to cats. In Polish we call them "kotki" (plural diminutive form of "kot" - cat).

@agturcz

Same here, we call willow blossom 'katjes' which means 'kittens'.

@wilpercy @Natasha_Jay

@pascaline Worth to know. Thank you 😊

@agturcz

You're welcome!
There is also the word 'catkins' which I like, it's cute. It seems kittens are loved all over the world 😊

@pascaline I am generally positively amused by this name being common in many languages, but Dutch is special, as I'm trying to learn it.

@agturcz

Oooh, well; good for you!

Learning Dutch is quite the thing, right?
Many of my expats learned it as they were building their lives here.
The most important is actually using the language with a native, via fun talks, either live or digital, and I remember teaching people Dutch or French. It was always fun 😊 My Dutch father studied French and got his teaching diploma, my mother was a French French teacher, I suppose it's in my genes πŸ˜€

@pascaline I'm not yet on the level of having a meaningful conversation yet, unless you ask me what I had for lunch πŸ˜…

There are some grammar quirks, like you don't use de and het frequently, but you need to know which kind of word it is, to use proper possessive.

Phonetics is demanding a little bit, although. Not all of it. But still, pronouncing "Groningen" as a native seems impossible to me.

@agturcz
Well, let me know if you need help (for free of course). One of the things I really enjoyed was to get the right sound out of every student πŸ˜€ I used to help children too and it was so wonderful to hear them say words their parents said they could never pronounce. So, don't hesitate!
@pascaline Thanks, I will make a note 😊

@pascaline @agturcz

I need to learn Dutch. I speak French, German and Spanish but the Dutch and Vlaams are my sort of people.... I love them so.

@tuban_muzuru

Go ahead, try to learn it 😊

@agturcz

@pascaline @agturcz

... so my first marriage was to a Spanish speaker (Guatemala) - so I'm fishing around for the word for "cloud" (nube). In French, it's nuage of course, and I'm wiggling my lips around.., "noo-ah-je" and she's laughing at me.

@tuban_muzuru

The French / Dutch 'u' is notoriously difficult for the English speakers.

Pour moi, la France, c'est la Normandie. Paris est magnifique, mais j'ai un faible pour le calvados…

@Natasha_Jay Cats are such funny creatures.

@Natasha_Jay

That red cat doesn’t really look β€œcomfortable”, it looks like it’s just going along with another hare brained idea of his buddies.

@Natasha_Jay a fresh sapling burrowing itself into the ground so that it will grow next year.
@Natasha_Jay pollen allergy is a lie, it was cats all along.

@Natasha_Jay

Yiu know they are ripe if you guve them a little squeeze and they mew.

@Natasha_Jay
Lovely πŸ₯°. Reminds me of the skin walkers movie from the 1980s. Who were cats

@Natasha_Jay

Low hanging fruit…

@Natasha_Jay soooo you're saying this is a pro of global warming?
@Natasha_Jay Cats sometimes do that to escape non climbing threats. Or because. Cats.
@Natasha_Jay Undeniable proof that climb-it change is real.

@Natasha_Jay Oachkatzerl 😍

(in bavarian it's a pun, but won't translate. A "Oachkatzerl" ("Oak kitten") is bavarian for squirrel)

@Natasha_Jay WOW, that tree has really big blooms already. Lol πŸ˜† 🀣 πŸ˜‚
@Natasha_Jay Deserve to be the cover for the future single/album of "cats on trees" band...
