In the next 2 to 3 days, Firefish.social will be switching from PostgreSQL to ScyllaDB for storing notes (posts) and their related data. As you may know, the way timelines are built (as inherited from Misskey) is very slow and inefficient and buggy, and this problem has been exacerbated for a while on Firefish.social. This completely changes how notes are stored and how timelines are built, and in testing, these changes have been shown to be more efficient than the previous methods by an extremely significant factor. I'd like to extend my extreme gratitude to @namekuji for developing [this branch](https://git.joinfirefish.org/firefish/firefish/-/merge_requests/10563), as a team member on Firefish, they've done some frankly incredible work and deserve recognition for this feat and everything else they've done for Firefish. $[jelly ❤️] ~🐦

Modern TVs have dimming features that can adjust backlight power in specific parts of the screen, sometimes even at the individual pixel level.

We wanted to see whether adapting BBC content could make use of these features and reduce energy consumption.

Introducing the energy saving concept of Lower Carbon Graphics

Developing and implementing a new idea which we believe has already saved energy in homes across the UK.

Maternal mortality rates are too high in #Texas and the U.S. in general. For every Dutch mother who dies, 50 Black American mothers die.

In our magazine, an experienced midwife explains how we could fix this crisis: https://www.texasobserver.org/texas-maternal-mortality-racism-midwife/

Save the Mothers

Maternal mortality rates are too high in Texas and the U.S. in general. We could fix that. New mothers need improved assessment and support.

The beta will be launching later this month, and btw most fediverse accounts will work, not just Pixelfed 😉

One interesting phenomenon I am observing: what used to be a link to a Twitter thread on Hacker News is now a link to fosstodon or hachyderm. The center of the conversation place is changing, Twitter is becoming the periphery.

@BBC5Live This is a conservative tactic globally and its tragically transparent.
A) defund public health care. Wait for crisis.
B) Present private alternatives to take over an increasing portion of health care until there's a two tier system.
C) Leave politics, accept board positions at health care companies (or vendors) . Collect massive kickback.

It's a shockingly simple and lucrative grift. What's even more shocking is that the electorate did it to themselves.

This kind of brilliantly stupid shit is what I miss from the early days of the internet
