Bookwell, need some help here. The novel doesn't want to write itself anymore

If you know people on social.cologne who aren’t Zionists/genocide supporters please let them know that they cannot see posts by me and others who oppose Israel’s ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people as our instances and accounts are blocked by their Zionist/pro-genocide server.

I can only assume Zionist/pro-genocide servers will not be allowed according to mastodon.social’s new server covenant and suggested as safe spaces to newcomers to the fediverse (including Palestinians suffering through genocide, ethnic cleansing, and apartheid) but it would be good to have official confirmation of this.

It’s time for people (and mastodon servers) to be unapologetically unambiguous about which side of history they stand on.

“Why care about belonging? Because it is fundamentally useful. It lets us predict a huge slice of the variance in developer productivity. Why care about psychological affordances around teams? Because it is useful. It lets us predict where we will find more effective teams and design for them.”

Gold like this is why I will never stop recommending @grimalkina to software developers. Mind-opening stuff about how to foster a learning culture in yourself and others.

Science at the Edge of the World

I decided to change my own mind about evolution in my freshman year of college, which is common: college is often the time and place where non-evolutionists grapple with whether we will become evolutionists.  I am comfortable telling people that I used to not believe in evolution – enthusiastic, even. Filmmaker Maya Deren, intellectual powerhouse, herself the possible progenitor of the concept of the double bind, in notes to herself in 1947 regarding a presentation on cybernetic circular feedback loops:

“But there is no society or organization *designed to change itself* and this is what the whole hitch is. Either he [humans] builds in both error and governor, or he builds in just the error and gets a revolution.”

The UK's Online Safety Act's push to protect kids online through content blocking and age checks sounds good—until you look deeper. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2025/08/blocking-access-harmful-content-will-not-protect-children-online-no-matter-how
Blocking Access to Harmful Content Will Not Protect Children Online, No Matter How Many Times UK Politicians Say So

The UK is having a moment. In late July, new rules took effect that require all online services available in the UK to assess whether they host content considered harmful to children, and if so, these services must introduce age checks to prevent children from accessing such content. Online...

@evacide I've already removed Gemini via adb once. I'll do it again if it comes back after this forced opt-in.

I am not going to tell anyone that the Gemini app package is actually called com.google.android.apps.bard. I am also not advising anyone to follow these instructions:

1. Download and install ADB on your computer from the Android SDK Platform-Tools package

2. Enable Developer Options on your Android device:

3. Go to Settings > About phone > Software information

4. Tap "Build Number" seven times

5. Go to Settings > Developer options > USB debugging

6. Connect your Android device to your computer using a USB cable

7. Open Command Prompt or Terminal in the folder where ADB is installed

8. Verify the connection via command prompt or terminal by running the command: adb devices

9. Then run one of the two following commands:

adb uninstall com.google.android.apps.bard

Or

adb shell pm uninstall --user 0 com.google.android.apps.bard

10. Then verify the package has been removed by running: adb shell pm list packages | grep bard

The #israeli army is calling for the evacuation and destruction of nearly 85% of Gaza’s land.
What kind of homeland is left for its people when they are driven out of it?

We are exhausted.
Tired of searching every day for a “safe place” in a land where no safety exists.

Where are we supposed to go? What is left for us?
Displacement after displacement… humiliation on top of injustice… a cycle of suffering that repeats every single day.
We want life — just life.
Is that too much to ask?

The state of California is warning 23andMe customers to delete their data because odds are good that the company is going to go bankrupt.

If I were you I would prioritize doing this.
