There are a host of data privacy decisions we must make every day – and it is exceedingly difficult, if not impossible, for us to make meaningful decisions about all of them.

In my PhD thesis, now online, I bridge philosophy and computer science to conceptualize and design for value-centered data privacy decisions. This novel value-centered approach helps us design for more meaningful, autonomous data privacy decisions.

A value-centered approach to data privacy decisions

A bit late, but better late than never!

I successfully defended my PhD in Philosophy last week. Special thanks to the examiners and chair for a wonderful discussion.

Next stop — TU Delft!

Scholars in the Netherlands and those interested in AI ethics, what have you found are the best Mastodon instances? I'm thinking of migrating.

Looking to dig deeper into the AI safety/alignment vs. AI ethics debate. Does anyone have any reading suggestions? Thanks!

In addition, the AI was not “replacing” John - it was used to isolate his voice from noise, allowing it to come out in a more crisp and usable form. If it had been used to fully generate his voice - or, the entire song as a “Beatles song” - especially in cases without the band member’s consent or ability to reasonably infer their wishes - this would start to become mortally problematic. We should all have some rights to our likeness’ use, even after death.

What do you think?

It also got me thinking about the bounds of AI use. I would argue that the appropriate use of AI in creative work, like music, lies in both the intention of the artists and the degree to which AI is used in the work. In this case, I think it is safe to assume that John would be OK with having his likeness, in this case, his recorded voice, used in this manner, because it was a song he was in the process of recording. As a #beatles fan and someone interested in #aiethics , I really enjoyed this article. #NowAndThen felt like a wonderful, moving journey through time. Using AI to isolate John’s voice from recordings allowed The Beatles to Come Together again, one last time, and take a final bow. It was powerful. (1/3)

Now and Then: enabled by AI – created by profound connections between the four Beatles

This new last Beatles song, enabled in part by AI, demonstrates the importance of the profound and lasting connections between the four musicians.

The Conversation
Thank you all for your perspectives and comments! I thought I would miss the professional connections on Twitter. I went without looking at it for almost a month now, and that was what I missed most. Today, though, I went on for the first time and my professional network was pretty much drowned out with toxic content. I think this is pretty telling. Hoping to create a professional community here now.
Thanks again!

Those who made the full switch and deleted Twitter/X: what were the pros? The cons?

I’m thinking about taking the plunge and only using Mastadon. I came over as part of the #twittermigration about a year ago. Twitter/X seems to just be becoming more and more toxic, unproductive, and unpleasant… I think it may be time to go.

Thanks for your insights!

PhD thesis is submitted! 🥳
Thanks to all the wonderful people who supported me on this PhD journey.
