Same handle at twitter, and have been there since 2007. Will toot in English and Tamil.
I firmly believe that (1) the PCPNDT Act has to be repealed and (2) India has to get serious about digitising healthcare.
Willing to converse decently on 1 & 2 with anyone interested.

#PSA - especially for #MedMastodon folks who love #reading #books

Dr Abraham Verghese's new novel, 'The Covenant of Water' is out.

It's right now available only as a #HardcoverBook in #AmazonIndia

But in some really good news for #audiobook lovers, it's available in #AudibleIndia narrated by the author himself.

@ghostrunner Thank you so much for the reco. I started with their second season, the Ottoman Empire. It’s really good.

So I have absolutely no hesitation in highly recommending both the #DeadTreeBook and #audiobook versions of

Ivan Turgenev's 'A Sportsman's Notebook,' also more popularly known as 'Sketches from a Hunter's Album.'

I just finished listening to this wonderful #audiobook superbly narrated by Steven Marvel. My initial assumption was wrong. This version was translated by Charles and Natasha Hepburn.
I really liked this book. I've bookmarked a few chapters to re-read as prose because Turgenev's descriptions and the translation are so exquisite. Of the 25 chapters / independent short stories, only 2 were boring, IMO. An impressive success rate for a mid 19th century writer to achieve with a 21st century reader.

The next #book that I've finished #reading in my #2023ReadingList is;

William Dalrymple's first book, written in 1986 when he was a 21-year-old Cambridge undergraduate. The #travelogue / #memoir / #history book, In Xanadu: A Quest.

Though I had misgivings about the author's opinions in several places, I liked the book. Though it happened less than 40 years ago, such a journey would be inconceivable now. That alone makes it a unique read.

I'm getting put-off by #SubstackNotes.

I've been trying it daily for two weeks now and I don't like how so many people that I encounter there seem to be pushy about their paid newsletters and getting more subscribers.

That place has a commercial vibe compared to #mastodon and #twitter.

@[email protected] "these apps that purport to tell you about a book in 15 minutes"

Oh no! 😲 You've misunderstood the Serial Reader app. See the screenshot from a Mashable review of the app. This app SERIALISES books and delivers one part per day to your phone. They do it for all the out of copyright classics within the app. We can upload our own epub books and get them serialised also.

Btw, I too hate book summary apps like Blinkist. I can't understand why people would read books like that.

@nodami Done. Thanks. Still not used to the alt text thing here in mastodon.

A Luxury Called Health: A Doctor's Journey Through the Art, the Science and the Trickery of Medicine by Kavery Nambisan

I could relate so well from the first chapter - as a small town boy who went to study in a medical college in southern India.
Oh, and I could never 'pith a frog.' I still can't stand frogs and reptiles.

Oh, btw, I used @SerialReader app to finish my last book - the Arundhati Roy book mentioned in my immediate last post. I think I put the app to good use. That's the first book that I finished using the app. This will definitely continue. Especially to clear up the unfinished books in my reading list. I'm finding it very useful and productive.
