In response to someone whining about "kids today" on another site, I dug out this quote again:

"Our Earth is degenerate in these later days; there are signs that the world is speedily coming to an end; bribery and corruption are common; children no longer obey their parents; every man wants to write a book and the end of the world is evidently approaching.”

It's from an Assyrian clay tablet. circa 2800 B.C.E.

Humans don't change, only technology does.

The debate about QTs is interesting because as far as I tell, all sides are correct.

• QTs let you introduce a topic to your followers w/ tailored commentary (Black Twitter is the best at this)

• They bring fame & attention to the worst people in the world

• They cause dogpiles

• They’re a great format for humor, which 🦣 needs more of

• They are often performative dunking “look at this loser”

• They let you address a side issue or add a different perspective w/o derailing the primary convo

Journalist profiles on the Washington Post's website can now include Mastodon links. Here's what it looks like: https://www.washingtonpost.com/people/drew-harwell/

Henrietta Lacks was a poor, Black, young mother diagnosed cervical cancer in 1951. When her cells were collected w/o consent, scientists saw they multiplied fast.

“HeLa” cells changed #science. They’re used globally to study viruses, drugs, hormones, genes, diseases & develop vaccines. Lacks passed away at 31 w no recognition.

Rebecca Skloot’s beautiful book about her life & legacy is changing that. Now her statue will replace Robert E. Lee in VA. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/20/us/henrietta-lacks-statue-roanoke-virginia.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare #history #HistoryRemix

A Statue of Henrietta Lacks Will Replace a Monument to Robert E. Lee

The statue, scheduled to be erected next fall in Roanoke, Va., is part of a local project to recognize Black history in community spaces.

Twitter formalizes blocking of accounts and tweets that encourage readers to follow you on other social media sites, including Mastodon.

Specific examples of violating tweets given in the policy:

Earlier today Elon Musk said that my ban was temporary, 45 min later he denied my appeal to reinstate my account and confirmed that I am *permanently* banned. The email I just received says the decision cannot be reversed.
I have never once violated Twitters rules or terms of service. I’ve never had a single tweet flagged, my account was permanently banned with no warning and with no reason, after I reached out to Musk for comment.

Happy to be here. Am one of the trio who resigned from #Twitter's Trust & Safety Council on Dec 8 before #Musk disbanded said Council on Dec 12. #introduction #Introductions

If Mastodon diehards want this to be The Next Place after Twitter, the move is to bend over backwards to listen to disabled and Black community about what they do and don't need in social media space.

Even if it's challenging.

Even if it makes you uncomfortable.

These are power user communities, whether folks like it or not.
