Trying very hard to avoid computers, and failing miserably.

A 30-something British-born coconut Indian living in Zürich, Switzerland. I speak English, and enough Hochdeutsch to order a pizza.

Occasional, inadvertent arsehole. If observed, please call me out.

Fascists, racists, Zionists, TERFs, homophobes, and other bigots can fuck right off.

PM me for my Signal or Threema handle.

Yelling into the void that putting the mortar next to the bowls and the pestle with the cutlery violates the high cohesion low coupling principle

hey! do you know things? do you wanna learn things? (i hope the answer to both those things is yes)

the other day, I offered on here that i would be happy to teach folks some basic web and terminal stuff. other people picked up the idea, also saying they'd be happy to teach!

so, because i have too much free time and not enough enrichment in my enclosure, it's a simple website now.

introducing fediLearns: https://fedilearns.fyi (edited name and domain)

want to be involved? send me some real basic info (fedi handle, what you want to share, title for your listing, category) and i'll put it on the site! and of course, share the site, either via this post or your own. I'm using the #fediSkillshares hashtag :)

---
edit: use #fediLearns ! turns out skillshare is an actual real company that I totally forgot about so I've adjusted a smidge. plus we have an actual domain now so I'm matching the domain :)

@jcreed @HarrisonGrodin @jonmsterling I think that sometimes students do this and are unhappy that they're going about research "inefficiently" by "wasting" all that time on step (2), but (a) efficiency isn't all it's cracked up to be anyway, and (b) as you note, the time is in fact not wasted
@HarrisonGrodin @jonmsterling well this has turned out to be a great example of my favorite strategy of reading research papers, to wit
1. Do not read the research paper; in fact, refrain from being aware that it exists
2. Bang your head against the wall trying to invent something
3. Find out about the research paper, which does it way better than whatever you were trying
4. Read the research paper
5. Delight in the fact that the accomplishments of the paper make a lot of sense thanks to #2
@drwho @gabrielesvelto Fascinating, I find it hard to believe but this does not mean it’s not credible.
@drwho @gabrielesvelto Might be true for some, I doubt the drop in price is mostly due to employees selling stock.
@drwho @gabrielesvelto Possible for people who have already been let go a while back, but IIRC Cloudflare promised to pay people through August.
@volpeon There's a classic Korean meme "I understand what you said, but why is this pigeon so big?" Later "why is this pigeon so big?" became a catchphrase about either big-looking objects or the futility of online arguments.
