I guess this makes sense. You are here.

I gave a talk at the final XOXO conference.

At first, I thought I'd revisit my first talk from ten years ago. But it turned into something different. Something about life, and art, and… McDonalds?

19 minutes. Try to go in without spoilers and watch until the end. 🙏 And thank you so much.

Now that X has become available in Brazil again, DAU on Bluesky has dropped from ~1.2 million down to ~700k, a loss of around 40%.

Honestly, my biggest opinion on the new Mastodon UI is that you should be able to click anywhere in the CW area to expand/collapse it. That's how it works in the apps, and it currently just feels weird having to click a little bit of text.

Oh no, it's spreading!

#HeyCohost I made a post over there asking what people liked about the site. Please add in if you have something to say! And if you're planning on developing Cohost 2, I hope it can be of some help. https://cohost.org/sam/post/7638196-what-did-you-like-ab
What did you like about Cohost?

From a design perspective, specifically. I see some people hoping for someone to carry forward the ideas Cohost had, and I figure it would be helpful for anyone who wants to try if they know what things were important to you all. What UI patterns did you enjoy? Which features have you never seen elsewhere? How was the site improved by things which were not included? (Also feel free to say what things you didn't like! Gently.)

Two things when it comes to advocating people to "join the fediverse/mastodon" (just my opinion from what i've seen):

1. DON'T TELL PEOPLE TO JOIN THE FEDIVERSE/MASTODON

People do not want to choose an instance. And even when people do, there's a good chance they pick an instance that isn't a good fit for them (if it doesn't just die within a few months). Find an instance that matches the people you're talking to and recommend that!

2. DON'T TRY TO EXPLAIN FEDERATION

I'm of the belief that federation is easiest to understand through using it yourself. Too often, people give overly detailed explanations that end up leaving whoever they're talking to confused. I would leave it at "you sign up here, and then you can interact with anyone else on Mastodon", and encourage them to ask questions as they come up.

Also, just be kind and flexible. It's fine to tell people about things like CWs and alt text, especially if they're new and might not know about them, but lots of people have been nagged off the fediverse entirely, and it would be nice if that stopped happening.

What if they just rewrote Tumblr in Rust instead
