Two things when it comes to advocating people to "join the fediverse/mastodon" (just my opinion from what i've seen):
1. DON'T TELL PEOPLE TO JOIN THE FEDIVERSE/MASTODON
People do not want to choose an instance. And even when people do, there's a good chance they pick an instance that isn't a good fit for them (if it doesn't just die within a few months). Find an instance that matches the people you're talking to and recommend that!
2. DON'T TRY TO EXPLAIN FEDERATION
I'm of the belief that federation is easiest to understand through using it yourself. Too often, people give overly detailed explanations that end up leaving whoever they're talking to confused. I would leave it at "you sign up here, and then you can interact with anyone else on Mastodon", and encourage them to ask questions as they come up.
Also, just be kind and flexible. It's fine to tell people about things like CWs and alt text, especially if they're new and might not know about them, but lots of people have been nagged off the fediverse entirely, and it would be nice if that stopped happening.
