I am a writer who made a career from writing for blogs. Since 2018, I’ve written about my experiences with mathematics. With a focus on math anxiety. I’m working on creating a math communications conference in the US. Links to both are in my bio.

I am working on self-publishing an ebook. The subject is creating content and the intended audience is scientists. I want to encourage people in STEM to make content for the public. I’m qualified to help because I’ve been writing content since about 2011. It also includes a chapter on building community. That early support is so crucial but many people don’t know where to begin.

As #Twitter continues to implode, my advice is to try #Mastodon again, if you tried it before and gave up. This time, follow these three simple rules:

1. Start with a good server. I love zirk-dot-us which is my server. (I'm @kerim)

2. Use a good third party client app. I love Ivory for iOS. Tusky and Fedilab are popular for Android.

3. Use hashtags. A lot. There is no algorithm for Mastodon so you need to follow hashtags to discover stuff, and use hashtags so you can be discovered.

People used to own their own websites in the pre-social media phase.

The ISP model was web hosting. Everyone would be a publisher. Everyone would have their own website.

Now the model is: you provide the content for someone else's website, for free. You don't own it, and it is used for a comprehensive surveillance system like the world has never seen to not only observe, but to manipulate and influence your affect and conduct. It is aggregated and used by every government and large corp.
