Quants & Quills

A not-for-profit, volunteer run organisation based in Brisbane, Australia exploring the future of media by bringing together technologists and storytellers.

One of my side projects is running @hackshackers (with a bunch of other folks: @rosieryan, @antmandan, @thom and other volunteers).

It's a monthly meetup looking at the intersection of technology and storytelling with a bit of a focus on media/journalism.

We have our next meetup next week and you should come along if you're into that kind of thing. We're going to be hearing about the way film and television distribution is changing due to streaming tech.

some words in this story and a form you can fill out, but the ultimate guts is this question I'm keen to hear from as many people as possible as many times as possible over the next year:

What do you want political parties and candidates to be talking about as they compete for your vote? https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/politics/queensland/major-parties-lay-out-their-election-year-plans-how-will-they-get-your-vote-20231025-p5eexn.html

Major parties lay out their election-year plans. How will they get your vote?

The next state election is now a year away, with Labor and the LNP honing their campaigns. We’re keen to know what you want them to focus on.

#hhbne only had a small crowd tonight but loved hearing behind the scenes of how @ash @jules and @tim made their voice referendum data story.
Absolutely brilliant talk here at @hackshackers by @silmonn from @qutdmrc @adms on the recent histories of fact checking, looking at everything from the role of large platforms to the adoption of specific fact checking norms in news rooms. Great critique of how the importation of western 'analytical' journalistic norms have created tensions to established journalistic practices in many contexts.
