Why some DVLA digital services don't work at night

Every few months or so, somebody asks on social media why a particular DVLA digital service is turned off over night. Rather than answering it every time, I’ve decided to write this post, so I can point people at it in future. It’s a great case study to show why making government services digitally native can be quite complicated.

@dwm @fanf That's also what I take it to mean. We've had interviewees recently who seem to think "DevOps" == "Ops which use infra as code" though :(.
@cmsdengl @bytebro confer AWS where you can get a (comparatively) bullet proof asynchronous application up and running with Lambdas, Load Balancers, Route 53, Aurora RDS, SQS and SES without ever touching a VM. (Or Cloud Run, Cloud DNS, Cloud SQL, Pub/Sub on Google. Although Google notably lacks an SES equivalent.)
