@fanf Huh. TIL too. I feel I should've been more aware of it since the estate I live in also has district heating: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derwenthorpe#Environmental_aims.

@elena I prefer the word "confabulation": the act of forming false statements by incorrectly associating and combining memories. That would appear to me to be a reasonable analogy for what LLMs do.

Though, much like "AI" itself, the wrong term has gained mind share and I long ago made peace with the fact that People use the Wrong Words For Things all the time.

What with all the madness surrounding Google search announced yesterday, I've moved all my browsers, including mobile, to use @StartpageSearch as default search. Where screen real estate allows, I've also allowed ads in order to help it stay non-shittified.

I've been using Startpage on my personal devices for some time and now is the time to swap work devices. #google #ai #search #enshittification

@2legged Da iawn.

I am staggered by the sheer hugeness of this.

The #WelshGovernment has a policy of bilingualism. All meetings include translators, so that speakers of English or Welsh can participate equally. But every member of the Welsh Cabinet is a native speaker of #Cymraeg, so the Cabinet meetings will be held in their native lsnguage.

Imposing the #EnglishLanguage was a key component of the imperial project of Britishness. But the tide has turned. 💚 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Remember 100 years ago when radiation was new and exciting and poorly understood, and companies were putting radiation into everything?

Thankfully we learned our lesson and will never make that mistake again.

Call me old fashioned, but I still think it's important to understand what you're doing.

GitLab is pivoting to "the agentic era."

If you can afford it, donate to Codeberg. Right now.

GitLab claim in their docs that you can verify your GitLab profile page on Mastodon by adding the Mastodon link to your GitLab profile but that's just false (https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/work_items/599766).

That being said, I just verified my GitLab and codeberg profiles links by temporarily setting my website on both to my mastodon profile and switching back. A bit messy and I do wonder if the green tick will eventually go away next time the mastodon server checks.
