An Incredible Day In Internet History

It started with the Twitter lockout. 10,000 new users per hour. A QUARTER MILLION people migrated to Mastodon in one day. The servers struggled. Remarkably, admins all over the world built up capacity in real time. New users were patient. The system held.

It's running better now. There will be more hard days ahead, but people powered social media has arrived.

you can see that my top half is people from auspol twitter, bottom half being a mix of international users that are between US affairs, tech, and foreign policies. interestingly, not many of them would overlap with auspol people but the clusters down there would often overlap via discussions about civil rights and global social justice.

a few months back people were trying to map out their audience and twitter space through this map. it was an interesting exercise to see how cluster of communities can be traced and connected despite such a loose structure.

unlike twitter, mastodon has a server address that kind of grounded you within a community group instead of making it easy for you to dip in and out different zones (fediverse and hashtags are not a default mechanism but an active filtering process).

atm i'm hoping and wanting to see some familiar users from my old network to have a mastodon, but it might be tricky to find them as a username isn't enough to chase them up.

Long overdue but it seems like I need a little #introduction to find my old twitter mutuals and hopefully getting to connect more interesting profiles.

I'm a queer Vietnamese international student currently based in Gagidal/Sydney. My interests are mainly about #DigitalHumanities #InternetCulture #QueerTransnationalism and #Linguistics.

People tend to know me through my angsty sex jokes and I often rant about Westerners coming from a migrant perspective. My twitter activity used to be in auspol, later in philosophy twitter, and geopolitics where I'd be whinging a lot about racist borders and Americanism.

Anyway, I hope the mastodon servers can pull through this period.

@weezmgk oh he's not personally disturbing me but for the sole fact of how much attention (both good and bad) have been feeding the kid makes me a bit concerned.
was about to say that we don't need to be worried about accidentally dunking on a minor. but i noticed that the famed kid journalist of auspol is here already and can't help to feel uneasy about it.

In the past, migrant workers in #Singapore were housed in overcrowded container camps. Up to 25 men slept in one container.

A Thai #migrant said: "Well, how can you describe it? It's like a box."

The migrant workers are not free to decide where they sleep, but are accommodated by their employers in dormitories. There is hardly any privacy, so conflicts are inevitable.

On the other site we did a thing each year called #WinterFolklore. We have masses of excellent films to share which contain elements of Winter Folklore; stories, myths, fairytales, creatures, customs, traditions and loads more goodies!

Buckle up, Mastodon - here we go!!

'The Humpbacked Horse / Конёк-Горбуно́к / Konyok Gorbunok' (1947) dir. Ivan Ivanov-Vano.

we're going to have to address about the age demographic that exist on here and why is it the case.

self-reminder: always, always vet through personal settings and any given affordances to maintain my own peace.

mass communication has its own blessings and curses. and i do not appreciate strangers' interactions that are often so careless and neglectful.
