Sociologist primarily interested in organizations. Working on the applied side. It’s all garbage cans.

Okay let’s give this thing a go.

In my column on Friday, I highlighted the shocking fact that Britons now have the worst access to healthcare in Europe, and this is causing worsening health

*1 in 6* UK adults needed medical examination or treatment in the last year but were unable to access it (due mainly to waiting lists), higher than in all 35 other European countries

We show that:

🚢International trade of agricultural goods partly mitigates climate change
🚰But water scarcity in 2050 will have a strong impact on comparative advantages

Time for an #introduction.

I'm a sociologist at UMich, and director of Organizational Studies.

I recently published a book, Thinking like an Economist: How Efficiency Replaced Equality in U.S. Public Policy.

I'm a cancer survivor trying to figure out life in a permanently changed body.

When I can, I'm looking to the past to think about what kind of intellectual movement could smash #neoliberalism.

@jazzsequence @sitharus have been thinking about how this has that fabulously weird BBS feel. It’s a great feeling to rediscover!

I keep seeing people say Mastodon is nothing like Twitter. And they’re right.

Mastodon is an echo of the old internet, it’s decentralised, chaotic. What you get depends on your sysadmin. You can’t search, everything has to be shared to you by a human. Networks split apart and rejoin. What you see is your unique connection to it.

Is this good? Maybe. But for me that’s the internet I grew up with. No algorithms, no targeted adverts, just human interaction, and it was glorious.

If anyone can explain how to more easily find #antitrust / #competitionlaw / #academictwitter / #legaltwitter people on here, I’d be grateful!
Machine-learning systems are problematic. That’s why tech bosses call them ‘AI’

Pretending that opaque, error-prone ML is part of the grand, romantic quest to find artificial intelligence is an attempt to distract us from the truth

Twitter is to Hobbes as Mastodon is to Tocqueville.

Brilliant show! Two drummers, I mean, come on!

#introduction

Hi everyone! I am Hyunsik, a PhD candidate in #sociology at the University of Iowa. I am broadly interested in organizational sociology (+ quantification), social movements, the political sociology of corruption, and race and ethnicity. I use both qualitative and quantitative (especially computational) methods to understand how (and when) collective action generates change. Glad to be part of this growing community!
