Math teacher by day, tech nerd by night. I like exploring places where the two passions can intersect.

Interests include:
#homeautomation
#woodworking
#cooking
#mathedu
and pretty much all other tech geekiness.

@ironicbadger As much as I prefer to make my own furniture, the material prices have me checking for pre-built as it's often cheaper than I could even buy the raw materials for.
@michaelharley I try to use stock #HomeAssistant whenever possible and only go to HACS if there's something I couldn't integrate without using it. I've gotten reliant on some HACS stuff before and been left struggling to fill in holes when the project disappears without warning.

Google's new HIGHLY INVASIVE ad monitoring and selling framework is now live in Chrome and it defaults to ON so you MUST ACTIVELY OPT OUT.

We all know this is bad, but here's how to do it:

Settings>Privacy & Security>Ad Privacy>disable these 3: Ad Topics, Site-suggested Ads, Ad Measurement

To be clear, this is for desktop AND MOBILE versions of chrome.

Daily reminder that Discord is not a wiki, guide site, or a forum. "Did you ask on the Discord?" is not a valid answer because someone will be looking for that info in a few years and either find invalid invites, or a dead Discord that they have to try to unearth their answer in previous discussion like they're trying to find obsidian arrowheads in Egypt. Assuming that Discord server even still exists at that point. And unlike when a site vanishes, there is no wayback machine for Discord servers
@mharleydev I have my parents house on all Shelly devices. They run Unifi gear for their wifi and everything has been rock solid so far.
@michal Thanks, I might go the passive display route.
@michal How's the speed, can it handle a #HomeAssistant dashboard? I have one laying around and would love to put it back into service.
My folks are off grid and use #HomeAssistant to manage their batteries and generator auto start. The primary use for this project is to wake them up if the battery runs critically low and the generator fails to start when called by the automation.
I forgot to take more pictures before delivering to the folks house but very happy with my latest #ESPHome project enclosure. This one is designed to sit next to the bed and has a passive rtttl buzzer which can play notifications from #HomeAssistant. The button on the top silences the audible alert. Also threw a temp/humidity sensor in because why not?
This one cuts deep:
The modern condition is mostly trying to do things on your own that people have historically achieved with a large support network and wondering why you're tired all the time.
