One of the more sobering developments is how the imaginary of Iranian Diaspora seems limited to shared tweets and the EU terror list.

There is a lot more that could be done to aid protesters on the ground, but few of those policies get the same level of unified support.

@philipgrant good luck, that would be awesome!
@philipgrant congrats my friend. I’ve been excited to read what came out of your Zanj project.

In my ≈ 2½ to 3¾ careers so far, no doubt the hardest thing I've had to do is publish a peer-reviewed journal article. This one took just over 3 yrs from workshop paper to #publication (albeit w a pandemic in between). It's about the #agency of #silk cloth in the #Zanj Rebellion agains the #Abbasid #Caliphate (869-883AD) in #Iraq & #Iran, part of a great thematic dossier on #rebellions in the first Islamic centuries. Will try to summarise later!

As I’m gearing up for a lot of changes in my digital life, I’m looking for an app to aggregate RSS feeds for tailormade news. I’ve used Feedly and Google News before but wondering if there’s an alternative? Perhaps even something indie/non-profit? #SocialMediaFatigue
Strangers in Our Own Country: How Afghan women cope with life under the Islamic Emirate - Afghanistan Analysts Network - English

Sixteen months since its takeover of Afghanistan, the Emirate has imposed sweeping new restrictions on women’s lives, kicking female students out of universities and education centres, and banning women from working for Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs). The bans have come on top of the continuing closure of girls’ high schools, the banning of female civil servants from offices, …

For 43 years, since the very beginning of the Islamic Republic, Iranians have been living in fear. ... It is a fear that permeates every ordinary decision you make, and makes you feel a little bit uneasy anywhere you go. You hide your joys, your sorrows, your anger. Because if you are too loud, they will come for you next.

But for once, it is no longer the people’s turn to be afraid." #Iran https://newrepublic.com/article/169711/iranian-women-uprising-revolt-year-2022

Iranian artist Vajihe Parizangeneh has been sentenced to 6 years in prison amid Iran’s brutal crackdown on protests. Her crime? She had sewed a sentence by Khamenei on her dress that said: “we should shed tears of blood for an Islamic society where even the possibility of leadership by someone like me is raised.” Khamenei had made the statement before his appointment as supreme leader in 1989.
