Pakistan’s foreign ministry has accused Afghanistan’s ruling Taliban of failing to protect Chinese diplomats after a suicide bombing killed five people in Kabul.
Beijing has expressed outrage at the attack, which targeted a meeting between Chinese officials and Taliban representatives.
The ministry said in a statement that Afghanistan had a responsibility to ensure the safety of foreign missions and their staff.
“The Pakistani government has noted with serious concern reports that the foreign ministry in Kabul has failed to fulfil its responsibility to ensure the safety and security of Chinese diplomats,” the statement said.
“Pakistan is in contact with both sides to stress the importance of an immediate and thorough investigation into the incident and to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.”
The bombing took place on Monday at the International Hotel in Kabul, where Chinese officials were meeting with Taliban representatives.
China’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Wang Wenbin, condemned the attack as a “serious terrorist act” and called for a “thorough investigation” and “severe punishment” for those involved.
The Taliban have condemned the attack and pledged to punish the perpetrators.
They insisted that security had been tight at the meeting, but acknowledged that attackers had managed to penetrate security and carry out the bombing.

The Trump administration entered this war completely ignoring the lessons that the US has learned at its own expense in Iraq and Afghanistan, and without the slightest attempt to coordinate with its European allies. The US’s failure to reopen Hormuz and ensure the safe passage of oil and gas shipments would be a resounding defeat.
rodluxMy thoughts to the civilians of #Iran today who face obliteration if #Trump follows through on his threats. That said, the Iranian #regime is awful and I would love to see it removed. But the killing of innocent civilians is not required and it is not up to countries who do not understand regional sensitivies to remove regimes they do not like. Least of all the #US and #Isreal. I thought the US would have learned after #Afghanistan and #Iraq.
